Improving the standing of the U.S. in the world is most definitely an important task, however, it's not the only one that Obama is faced with, nor is it the most important.
While the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have most certainly increased "tensions" between the West and the Muslim world, those "tensions" existed long before either of those ventures were conceived.
Also, improving relations isn't the sole responsibility the U.S. or of the West. In order for relations to improve, the Muslim world is also going to have to make an effort at improving them as well rather than just giving a ceaseless and uncompromising list of grievances.

And I thought it was the attacks on the US that increased tensions between the western world & the muslim world. You know, American Embassy takeover in Iran in 1979, Kobar Towers, USS Cole, WTC in 1993, the Embassies in Africa (all before Bush), & of course 9/11.
