CAN you help to mark the 200th anniversary of what could be the oldest Co-operative Society in the world? The Lennoxtown Friendly Victualling Society was set up in the village in 1812 and later expanded into several shops across the district.

I grew up in the village and my Mother's Coop membership number was 1568. I still remember the little receipts they gave you.

I can also remember the following Coop shops:

Bottom of the village (left hand side facing Greenhead Road)- a general grocery (later became a joiners and then a hairdressers)
Left hand side of upper Main Street - a Bakery, an outside door leading to a staircase up to the offices upstairs (you went there to get your dividend money - sort of like a bank, the Dispatch(down a steep walkway off the street where you could buy milk and cakes - always had a bit of a sickly milky smell there), the Clothing, haberdashery and household goods store (remember Mrs. Scott working there), the Central grocery (remember Maxwell Ferrie working there and the big stack of butter that they cut from and then used the wooden pats to shape the pieces, the Butchers (remember Mr. Klaus and Mr. Stevenson (sp?) working there).
Right hand side of Main Street - Greengrocers and fishmongers (Remember Mrs. Boyle working there. She used to let me weight the potatoes in the big scale)and the Chemist that later became Coia's newsagents (I can't remember the name of the woman who worked there but she married a Thompson)

Happy memories of a village that no longer exists.....

Worked in the Co-op bakery when Jean White was in charge, back in the late 50s. Fondly remember the delicious bakery smells!
