Wales on verge of relaxing smoking ban for actors to puff on set

The Welsh Government is considering whether film and television actors should be allowed to smoke on set in productions shot in Wales.

This is an area where the technology of the e-cigarette could shine. Put in a 0-nicotine cartridge, disguise the end if needed with tappable ash, and away you go.

The advent of this technology should allow England to remove the loophole from its law as well, instead of having Wales backpedal.

There are many places in the US with this sort of "free speech" exemption written into their smoking regulations. In some, it only applies if the smoking is an important element in the sense of the scene. As noted, though, there is technology readily available that would negate the need for such exemptions. They use prop knives and blank bullets to avoid actual harm to actors, why should they permit real tobacco smoke?
