This brings back happy memories of my visits to Painswick in the immediate post war years. My brother and I used to spend almost every day on the beacon, passing the Gyde orphanage and collecting golf balls on the course. WE stayed with the Mills family in Vicarage street, in a thatched house which faced directly on to the path running down to the mill. The locals lads used to catch rabbits by ferreting. One happy memory was going round in the bakers van doing deliveries. I would be ten years old then!

I forgot to add that my memories were saddened when I returned in early 1980's to find that all of the villagers in Vicarage street that I knew had left Painswick and were living in Stroud, nailsworth etc. Had they been forced to move by virtue of their rented homes being sold off privately?

I have been back to the Cotswolds on many occasions in recent years with National holidays coach tours. Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold were two of the main villages visited.Nice to go back!
