Weigh in on the 'Wife Swap' debate

We've already received a couple calls this morning at The Register from Iowans who are outraged about how our state and its citizens were represented last night in an episode of 'Wife Swap' on ABC that followed ... Read more

I was totally appalled and incensed by last night's Wife Swap program. My first impression of last night's show was that the Iowa Child Protective Services should have been called in to rescue these children from their abusive and insane parents! These childeren are slaves living in squalor! They are not learning life skills by anyone's standards; where do they learn socialization skills? How do they interact with others outside their family (is there any interaction?)? The young boy became so frustrated that he couldn't even find the words to put his thoughts into coherent sentences--a result of 1) working by himself among farm animals; 2) not being required to read or participate in fundamental educational basics, 3) no interaction with the outside world (I could go on). Same applies to the young lady; additionally, what kind of wife/mother is she going to be if she emulates her mother's housekeeping and personal hygiene practices? This type of backward, hedonistic family life style is beyond ignorant, and it is an insult to Iowans! It does not, repeat: DOES NOT, in any way portray what life is really like in Iowa--on the farm or in town!

You are absolutely right. If the mother took the time to look at herself in the mirror, just once, she would se that the dental hygene methods she is practicing isn't working. Her gums were so inflamed and red, they looked as if they would burst. And, who has ever heard of NOT washing ones hands after touching any animal? Absolutely disgusting. Those poor children.

I agree with both of the previous posters. If DHS or some other agency hasn't already been at their door today, then something is VERY WRONG with our society. I work at a middle school with kids that have learning disabilities, (spec. ed.), and the kids I work with were talking about the show today. They were disgusted by the way those kids had to live also. If I would have been on the film crew for the show, I would have been on the phone to Children and Family Services as soon as I walked into the house. Unbelievable.

I think that family is such an embarassment to our state. I also agree with the previous post about those poor children. What those parents are doing in my opinion is a form of child abuse. Doesn't the state of Iowa require parents to send their children to school? I know some people home-school, but what this family is doing is NOT schooling. I hope for the childrens sake that someone will help them get out of that situation. I have seen a lot of crazy things on that show but, this one takes the cake.

Reality shows arent real!!! Ive watched that show before and they put completely opposite people with different families, they argue it up for the cameras, then at the end they all hug and make up. Come on its fake, its TV. If this was real life some of those people would kill each other. Do you people think WWE wrestling is real too?

I agree that this was an embarassment to Iowa. I grew up on a rural Iowa farm and we certainly didn't eat raw meat, and we cleaned the house!! Maybe the Health Department should make a stop at the house, along with DHS. I'm not so sure the animals had better conditions than the kids.

If anyone has Farmed. They know it's a tiresome, thank-less ,JOB!

Some Independent Farmers in Iowa. Haven't the Luxury of Fancy Houses, Fancy this & Fancy that. They make do with what they can afford.

Want a peek at a day of an Iowan Indepeden farmer?

Get up at 4:00am. Get dressed, throw your heavy winter coat on and head out to Milk the Cows in the Barn.
But first you vae to stop at the Silo and augur the days dry cows rations out into the bunker.
It's -35 farenheit and the wind is blowing 20 MPH.
You stand there for 10 minutes as You operate the auger. You're near frost bit by the time your've reached the Barn. You make a quick check of your Herd, check the Waterlines, check their beds and start re-raking theiur beds and clean any POOP they may have had an accident over-night there.

Head up into COLD loaf and grab some 100lb. Straw Bales for their Beds, throw them dow. Quickly bed Cows. It's almost milking time.
OOOPS! Gotta feed'em first. Run outside grab 10 gallon buckets of cracked corn for each cow which weigh 40 lbs. each . Run a bucket to each cow. OOPS! I have only 2 arms and hands , and 40 cows!
Thatmeans I make 20 trips out into cold weather and back again. Next I have to throw down Fresh feed Hay for cows also. Each cow gets 3-4 slabs, Go, GO, GO. It's almost time to Milk.

Get milking supplies together, start up Vaccum Pump Milk Machine. Make sure it's running correctly. Filters IN! I'm a Lucky one! I have a Milk machine that cleans the Milking units after each Milking, Except the outsides, I have to do it.

Clean cow utters and attache Suction nipples to each nipple on cows utter after I cleaned it. This goes on for 1-1/2 or more hours, until done.
OH OH! I found a cow that is sick. So I can't milk her yet. I have to wait until I get done too milk her sepoerate from all the other cows milk so Her milk doesn't go in with Good milk.
All done Milking, have sick cow to treat. Damn lost some money today because of a sick cow.

Time to clean the Barn, GET GOING! Have lots to do today yet.

Con't- Time to clean the Barn. SCrape ,Scrape Scrape the Aisles between the cows. Pitch all their Bad dirty bedding out the door into the Manure spreader. Manure in the gutter. Shovel that out to auger to manure spreader. new bedding if neede for cows . Put some Lime on the floor to control diseases, nothing grows in Lime. OHH! All this stuff after milking and I had to clean up the Milking Units also and change the filter.

Now out to the feild. Gotta spread that manure.
CRAP! I broke a chain link. Now I have to stand out in the cold and chisel off all the crap so I can fix the drive chain. another hour our in the frigid cold. AHH! DONE! Butt my fingers just fell off. Out to the feilds. Got back, parked the tracter. Time to take care of the little ones. Calves, Some get water and starter fead, and some get Milk from Mom. Today I have to clean their little homes out and pitch dirty bedding. AHHH such FUN! Pitch pitch pitch, pitch stinky dirty bedding into manure spreader, because the load was full before. Head back to feild, AFTER I re-bedded Calves and fead them.
Now what? Oh have to go gring Fead for Cows Unhook the tracter, go hook up Mill. Off to Corn Silo to get corn and grab fead bag adatives for mix. Standing in frigid cold still.-35 degrees wind chill ! Got that done off to storage Bin to dump it. That took a couple of trips and hours.

WOW! It's 10 am . Time to get some coffee and maybe a fried egg. 6 hrs in for the Day and the day has just started! What? Hell no I'm not done until the sun sets! And you think you pay to much for MILK? I have to do this all over again This evening! Except clean the barn and take out manure in the spreader to the feild.

Now I have until 5 pm to get my work done on My combine . O have tons to do before spring to make sure My mnachinery works perfect in teh feild for planting and harvesting. PLus I have to run to the VET and get some stuff for the Calves. Darn something always needs worked on.
Well it's 10 pm and I'm doing books finally had time to get here. Missed lunh today and barely had time toi grab a bite to each at supper.
It's 11pm, time for bed have to get up in 5 hours.

People in glass houses, should'nt throw stones...... OR!

Just because you live in Beverly HILLS, don't judge others homes when you compare them to yours.
This Iowa womans home is a 1940 HOME! And I thought it looked in rather excellant condition for such an Old , Old home.
People these day have become so materialistic. They cannot even be glad for others that they have a home. There's 1,000,000 people in America that walk the streets HOMELESS! SO?

When you put yourself onto a Pedalstol and wave your flag . You do nothing for mankind. Except attract attention to yourself.

its people like you that keep making these "reality" shows, i use that term loosely, successful. They are for ENTERTAINMENT!!! I dont watch that show, because i prefer not to lose brain cells, but from what ive heard, do you actually think all those people would sit there and watch people treat kids like that film it, and nothing is done?? Im not saying the people are fake, but their lives are. They are being paid to be on camera and entertain. My friend was on the Jerry Springer show once, they put him up in a hotel room, introduced him to his supposed "baby's momma" who'd hed never actually met until the day before the filming, and went out there and acted up a fake scenario. And people like you sat in the crowd and booed and cheered, not smart enough to understand that the whole thing was fake. Hollywood has been fake for years, they put things on tv that they know will upset, scare, or get people to watch their show again. Maybe when some people figure this out this whole stupid reality show craze will finally end, and we can actually get an intelligent show on tv.

Yeah, but at the end of the day, people from other states will always see iowa, and iowans in some type of crazy capacity. I'm from iowa, and i left because iowa can be very imbarresing.Iowans know what people think of them, yet all they do is whine and talk about how much education you have, hell who can tell. You mean to tell me that there is no one in iowa , and with all that brain power down there thats creative enough to come up with something that could put iowa on the map. Do something ,or get something no other state dose, or have, and please do not build a corn palace,(country asses). You should be focusing on making them jealous of iowa. All those insurance companies down in des moines and you guys can not get them to put a pro sports team in iowa. This is why they say iowans are backwards thinkers.

When I saw that show, I could think of a few other people from different states who come really close to living like that. And I've run into a few who would use butter and clay on their teeth, if given the chance..... ;) Idiots are all over the place. Hell, we have them in Texas, too! And before people say ANYTHING about Waco, I've heard it all. So please, don't even try.......

I just read in the Des Moines Register that the DHS dept has been swamped with calls regarding the treatment of these kids. Their response: "Just because they have an unusual diet and live in an untidy home does not mean the children are abused." The family has registered with the state as home-schoolers so that is not an issue either. I am totally appalled. Even if you put the diet aside, their home was not fit for an animal, let alone children. I know for a fact their have been other children taken out of homes for a lot less reason than the filth these children are forced to live in. That home IS unfit and the state is once again "Dropping the Ball" and NOT protecting the children the way should.

What Business is it of the States. How people raise their children? As long as they ar ehealthy, kept clean and warm and loved and have a good family enviroment. ETF? Q: Who are you to decide what is good or not for people? This is just what's wrong with this country. Idiots think they can get the State to do everyones responsbility thing for them.
But that isn't the real issue for you STATIST!You just want to control how people LIVE, put them into some kind of slavery to control them even more.
You want people to live the way YOU WANT, as long as it satifies your Idealistic pallet. Then profit off them by making all communites work at the same standards you deem Fair(IN you rlittele minds), and then tell them what a great world they live in. Damn SOCIALIST! FU-BAR!

You make it sound like Iowa is good for nothing. There are plenty of great things in Iowa. People just need to dig a little deeper to to find them. The Loess Hills and The Bridges of Madison County are just two of many interesting things. Iowa State University is the location where the very first computer was invented. The Iowa State Fair is the biggest state fair in the country. Iowa is just one of those states looked over by most people. We are no better, or worse than anyone else.

PS I would consider that you work on both your spelling, and your punctuation. If your going to verbally bash someone, at least do it right.
