The repeal of prohibition turned a large number of criminals into respected businessmen overnight. The same would apply if drugs were legalized. The problem is the lawyers won't get as rich. Most politicians were lawyers and much of our legal system was put in place to benefit this fraternity.

I haven't seen the Wire but I've heard quite a lot about it from online friends and I'm glad the issue of the drug war is finally getting some realistic air-time in the MSM. Being arrested and jailed for a nonviolent drug offense really is unamerican and an unconstitutional violation of American citizen's rights.
We should embrace the reality that these draconian Rockefeller drug laws and mandatory minimums for simple "possession of drugs" are very dysfunctional policies for the USA (and the world) and turn the computer clock back to a time before they were created, to a time in the early 70s.
