Has anyone else had a chance to see the documentary Afghan Star? It was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show when Oprah focused on Susan Boyle. I caught a preview screening of the film, and was really excited to see it after seeing it on the show, and my expectations were not let down! Afghan Star is the name of the Pop Idol of Afghanistan-- I bet you didn't know they had one, right? Singing was outlawed during the rule of the Taliban, but has now come back into the culture in a big way. The documentary follows four finalists (including two women) as they make their way through the televised reality program. One third of Afghanistan voted in the finale! It really is an incredible look at a side of Afghanistan you don't normally see on the national news. It was also very eye-opening to see how far women's rights have gone in the country, and also how far they still have to go. I recommend seeing it when it hits theaters in NY on June 26th!
