The stud is a dud. And that's only the first of a dozen problems with CBS' admirably ambitious but jaw-droppingly wrongheaded new musical/murder mystery/family drama "Viva Laughlin." Let us count the ways it ...

This article sums it up beautifully. How is it possible for producers to recognize a brilliant program sufficiently to invest in copying it (and it did not look like a cheap effort), and then proceed to obliterate everything that made the original exciting and interesting? AAaaaahhhh. Disaster. The only changes to the plot and script should have been what was strictly necessary to change the location. If something was a particularly British reference, surely there were writers available to come up with a suitably witty American reference. Please folks don't blame the style, of the program, blame the execution.

Dan Rather: Government Influencing Newsrooms
September 21, 2007
http://tinyurl.com/2gsehh
NEW YORK -Dan Rather said Thursday that the undue influence of the government and large corporations over newsrooms spurred his decision to file a $70 million lawsuit against CBS and its former parent company.

“Somebody, sometime has got to take a stand and say democracy cannot survive, much less thrive with the level of big corporate and big government interference and intimidation in news,” he said on CNN’s “Larry King Live

In the suit, filed a day earlier in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, Rather claimed CBS and Viacom Inc. used him as a “scapegoat” and intentionally botched the aftermath of a discredited story about President Bush’s military service to curry favor with the White House. He was removed from his “CBS Evening News” post in March 2005.
“They sacrificed support for independent journalism for corporate financial gain, and in so doing, I think they undermined a lot at CBS News,” he told King.
Rather didn’t mention other instances in which he believed news organizations bowed to corporate and government pressure.

Petition: CBS Must Re-Hire General Batiste
http://tinyurl.com/2ekzrh

It took CBS two weeks to fire Don Imus for racist and misogynistic comments, but it only took them two days to fire respected General John Batiste for speaking out against the president on the war.
It's censorship, pure and simple. We're aiming to get over 100,000 messages demanding that CBS re-hire Major General Batiste by the end of the week. Can you help?

Dan Rather Sues CBS For $70M
Ex-CBS News Anchor Says He Was Made "Scapegoat" For Story On Bush's Military Service
NEW YORK, Sept. 19, 2007
http://tinyurl.com/3xm79l
(AP) Dan Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit Wednesday against CBS, alleging that the network made him a "scapegoat" for a discredited story about President Bush's National Guard service.

The 75-year-old Rather, whose final months were clouded by controversy over the report, says the complaint stems from "CBS' intentional mishandling" of the aftermath of the story.

The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, also names CBS President and CEO Leslie Moonves, Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone, and former CBS News President Andrew Heyward.

To get back on the topic of this post, Dide, Australian humor is different from British humor (and how!); which is different from American humor--each is unique and should be tailored to their respective audience. I see in "Viva Laughlin" not mainly a mystery/drama but a farcical and light-hearted musical/comedy and draw a lot of inspiration and entertainment from its writers. Viewed from this perspective, it can become a success.

Yeah, it can, if the American Ripley didn't come off as such an arrogant jerk. And if he could sing rather than just drone along to the lyrics. And if he could dance. And if the show centered on a lovable loser's dreams, rather than showing off the said arrogant jerk's supposed "cleverness", "sexiness", "business acumen", or whatever the heck his supposed virtue is this week. Scrap it and start over.

Ripley is a shallow arrogant jerk, but he's just emblematic of the audience out there; just as George Dubya Bush represents the tastes of the American political body. I knew that from the beginning. That's why I treat this murder/mystery with great light-heartedness.

IT'S TIME YOU THOUGHT OF YOUR OLDER POPULATION, WE DON'T CARE ABOUT ALL THAT VIOLENCE THEY HAVE ON TV TODAY. IT'S A PROVEN FACT IT'S RAISING HAVOK WITH OUR KIDS. PLEASE LEAVE IT ON A LITTLE LONGER AND SEE WERE IT GOES FROM HERE.

Telepacific Communications AKA Mpower has lied to us.becarefull when dealing with them. I tried several times to resolve this issue with Tom Norys, Rhonda, Telepacific corporate to no avail. Below is a copy of the claim I filed with the PUC. If any of you have had problems with Mpower ot Telepacific please let me know as I have a large law firm ready to begin a class action.
Below is a copy of the claim I filed with the California Publice Utilities Commison
(lets see if they help and if our tax dollars are going to a good cause)
Dear PUC: This is very simple. We added a new location and division to our business. When we spoke to Tom Norys the sales manager for telepacific he assured us in WRITING (which we can present all of these to you at anytime) that we would not be penalized with any fees since we are in fact just adding / transferring service. Therefore we stayed with telepacific based on these written assurances. Several months later we receive a bill for $8,000.00 for early termination! We contacted the department that sent us this bill (spoke to Rhonda @ 213-xxx-3308) and she basically called us liars and asked us to fax ( fax # 213-xxx-3309) her the emails from Tom Norys assuring us of no penalties. I faxed her right away and in fact called her to make sure she received it. Her reply was yes but she would need to confirm with Tom Norys! Wow talk about making us look like bandits. I even gave her our current locations info to further prove we are still a client of theirs! In addition to all this I also contacted Tom Norys and he AGAIN in writing re assured us that we are not to pay the fee and he promised in writing ot contact Rhonda directly. He even email me back that he did this and all was done. Based on this email we figured this was final. Last week we get another bill for $8,061.64! I again contacted Tom Norys via email and phone on October 25th 2007 and reminded him of his WRITTEN assurance and advised him of this recent and fraudulent bill sent us. Needless to say as of today I have not heard from him. I can not risk having our credit affected for something we do not owe. What's really sad is that we are an existing client of this company and spend over $1,500 a month with them at our new location. This is just ridiculous. I plan to take copies of this claim to the media, the web forums, the bbb etc. In the meantime we ask that you please help us. God Bless

What a bummer, I was disappointed by the show but it was cool to see the inside of Don Laughlins office on the top floor of the Riverside. For Mohave County Real Estate in the area go to www.kingmanlandbrokers.com

Thanks,

Justin Chambers
