Just watched highlights of the Liverpool/Sunderland game tonight, and saw Stevie G get a yellow card for a rather blatant elbow on Danny Wellbeck.
The ref gave him a yellow card, which suggests he saw the incident. However, I thought a deliberate elbow to the face was an automatic red card.
I don't support Liverpool, though I have great respect for Gerrard as a player. I just have a sneaky suspicion that any of the Premiership's usual 'villains', would have got an automatic red.
Gerrard seems to have some sort of 'protected' status, and it extends to the Match of The Day team. In the analysis after the match, all of the ref's (many) mistakes were shown repeatedly, yet no mention of the Gerrard elbow, never mind any sort of analysis on the incident.
I understood where Steve Bruce was coming from when he asked if Lee Cattermole would have been treated the same way. I suspect he would have been red carded, and the incident repeated ad nauseum afterwards during the match analysis.
But maybe I'm just paranoid...
