Burl Cain is a great warden. I have come to enjoy Louisiana Lockdown. I believe that if we as a country are going to lock our dangerous criminals up for life, they still need a life with some hope. They need to be able to excel or suffer the consequences of their actions. They have the opportunity to consider the course they set for their lives, & the damage they have done to others. At the same time, a person who has to live a 'life' behind bars has to be able to contribute, and to have some kind of a sense of community, even in a prison setting. They can not spend the entire rest of their lives hating themselves living in a cage.
Years ago, not having broken the law, I made choices that seriously damaged my life. At some point in time a saying came to be my favorite. It was "Blossom where you have been planted."
The inmates made decisions that planted them securely at Angola. They still have lives even though it is separate from the greater community. I feel that Burl Cain is teaching them something that perhaps their parents failed to, and that is that, You will be judged by your deeds and that if you act more responsibly, you will be treated with more respect and given a bit more freedom. And, that you must contribute.
Keep up the good work Burl Cain. You have set a standard as a warden that will be hard for any man to follow.
God loves ALL of us, even the bad along with the good. And, "There for the grace of God go I." And we should be praying for the healing of their souls vs hoping for their endless suffering.
