"Make no mistake: Anything other than an immediate and compliant,'Why no sir, I don't want the president to fail,' is treated as some sort of act of treason, civil disobedience or political obstructionism," Jindal said, adding, "This is political correctness run amok."

Yeah, like when many objected to the Iraq War. They were called traitors, pacifist, pro terrorists and many other vulgar phrases. So Jindal, you are the poster boy of pc, except the shoe is on the other foot. The obstruction of republican who want to please Rush will haunt you in 2012. Be ready to go home crying in a handkie.

For more than a decade now we've had best-selling books by the like of Ann Coulter, who has advised people that the best way to "talk" to liberals is by using a baseball bat.

It was, by the way, Ms. Coulter who - in the wake of the John Walker Lindh case - said that he should be executed so that liberals realize they could be killed, too.

We've had more than a decade of Limbaugh's radio program, in which every societal ill is laid at liberals' feet. We've had Hannity, who wrote a book on how to defeat terrorism despotism - and liberalism.

We've had "liberal hunting permit" T-shirts. Hilarious.

We've had more than a decade of rhetorical thuggery, constant implicit suggestions of violence and on more than a few occasions some overt suggestions.

Are you really going to sit there and say that everyone gets the "joke," that there aren't people who are going to take this message to heart? After all, when things go south for them personally, they've already been instructed as to who's to blame.

That is absolutely not to say all Republicans or conservatives would do this - but we see, now, that some who strongly identify with the anti-liberal brand would do it. And my question is this:

If a self-identified liberal and hater of conservatives walked into a conservative megachurch and opened fire - do you think conservatives would be howling about how it proves liberal malevolence?

This is years of talk-radio hatred coming home to roost - as it was always going to. You don't tell people that one specific group - the liberals, or in an earlier time the Jews - is to be despised without inciting actual hatred, and inciting some people to act on that hatred. You accuse liberals of treason, some of your most popular commentators actually on occasion suggest physical violence might be helpful - and then we act surprised when someone takes them up on the suggestion?
