Fall TV Sneaks: Where we left off

seriously, though, i'm a bit skeptical about the new season of the mentalist. i really hope they know what they're doing adding what looks to be a annoyingly caustic prick of a new character (i hope he's at least somewhat likeable, or else it'll be a chore to watch season 2, if i continue to watch at all).

I agree that additions to a cast can sometimes be the kiss of death, but given how unlikely it would be that Patrick Jane would be able to get away with as much as he did in season one, I think the addition is realistic. The fact that he's had a past with Lisbon, though, just smacks of unoriginality. People do show up with no connections to anybody in real life, so it shouldn't be all that difficult to do the same on a TV show.

As for your description of the new character, consider this: Dr. House is most definitely an "annoyingly-caustic prick," but that show has been on for several seasons now. Maybe it won't be so bad for The Mentalist to have a similar character...we hope.

i see what you mean, but house md is based around the fact that the main character is more than that--he was developed and made deeper than just a jerk with a chip on his shoulder. this new guy (basco, i think?) just seems like a character that is a jackass for the sake of being a jackass (and he's only in, what, seven episodes? i don't think they'll do much character development for him, though i could be wrong). it almost feels like a cop-out; like they're doing this just to add "tension". eh. if i'm wrong, i'm wrong. and i do hope i'm wrong.

but, come to think of it, they did something similar on castle and i was immediately turned off by that. i guess that's why i'm worried about the mentalist. oh well.
