Randy Travis' Country Drive

Some teens are rebellious. Randy Traywick was a flat-out hell-raiser. At age 12, he was already drinking.

You would think Randy would pay us a visit from time to time. With all the crap that goes on around Marshville, I can't say that I blame him. You are only as good as the company that you keep.

All that matters is the person you become. Sometimes you don't want to go back to where you were considered a troublemaker. We do stupid things as teenagers, that doesn't mean that's how you'll be as an adult.

Marshville is planning a day in the park for the people here. It would be wonderful if Randy would come back and visit. I just do not see it happening. He seems to be doing very well for himself and I am glad for him. He left here and turned his life completely around . He is a Christian and is on Rev. Hagee's Church Service on Sunday's quite often. Everyone makes mistakes and they eventually learn right from wrong. Randy just got off on the wrong foot. Well he seems happy and looks well. I am proud he made something out of himself. His wife deserves a lot of credit too.

He slips in and out of town now and then...
If you lived in Hawaii, I doubt you'd be in M'ville much either...

Don't his brother still live here or did he move away? I know he still has some Traywick kin here.

Randy's daddy when he was alive used to come and light on daddy's porch of a evening. He and my pop would swap stories and have a little nip. Sometimes if they didn't get loaded pop would carry him home in our old Buick. I remember Randy and his brother was mean little dickenses. One day them boys stole my new Sears and Roebuck bicycle and rode it all the way to a store in Peachland. Daddy and Mr Traywick had to go over there and get it because Randy left it and caught a ride back to Marshville. Mr Traywick took a belt to Randy's ass for that.

James Morris, you are dyed in the wool, 100% bonnified Union County!

Some of the expressions you use are only heard and used by old time Union County natives. For example "to light" in Union county means to come and sit with us. I've never heard it used anywhere else.

"to carry" someone means to give them a ride in Union County vernacular. I have heard that expression also used in Chesterfield and Lancaster Counties SC.

"Of a evening" or "of a morning" in union County means early evening just after sundown or early morning just after sunrise.

To answer your question yes, I believe Randy's brother still lives in Marshville. Randy does slip into Marshville occasionally and visits his aunt and uncle who live out Olive Branch Rd.

I can remember Randy hanging with some friends (or relatives) who lived on the left right before you get to the Marshville cemetary, That's been many years ago.

I actually picked guitar with Randy a couple of times way back about 1973 give or take a year or two in either direction. All I remember was thinking that he had a big powerful voice. I also picked in a group that backed up Regina Leigh one night. That was my 15 minutes of fame I guess Unless you count the time I accidentally stole Gov. Hunt's umbrella at one of Carol Edwards' get togethers.

The last time I can remember seeing Randy in Marshville was back about 1997. He had a couple of hit records by then. I saw Randy and his brother riding through town one afternoon. I waved and they waved back but I don't think either of them recognized me.

I've been trying to remember the family that had that show horse farm about a mile out Olive Branch Road back in the 1960's. There was a big pond out back of their place that was grown up and not many people knew about it. We were always looking for a place to go fishing when we were kids. Randy knew how to get to that pond without anybody seeing us. We caught some big old bass out of that pond.

Just curious but by what you wrote I am under the impression that Mr. Trawyick passed away. Do you have a date as to when this has happened?

I do believe Harold Bruce is still with us, out there in Olive Branch.

I am sure a BIG fuss would have been made, had he passed.

He's still out there. I have seen him recently. And Randy has been to see him this summer but you'd never know. They like to keep it quiet when he comes so only a few know.

He sings good. I know all them Traywicks in his daddy's family. I am kin by marriage to some of them. A long time ago there was a regular Traywick reunion every year down the hill on 601 S from Hilltop. There was a "Traywick Inn" (like a hotel in a big brick house--I think it's still there) across from Monroe Golf course.

I believe they took that house down when they widened Hwy. 601 a few years back, it was in the corner where Old Hwy. 74 comes off 601 right across the bridge. I think.

It was the Max S. Stewart farm, about 160 acres sold in 2006 to Carroll Edwards who'd tried to buy it for years prior as it adjoined his property. The home has been occupied with foreign invaders I believe.

LOL Foreign invaders! How about ILLEGALS??? I just came from the Boll Weevil Jamboree. There were no foreign invaders there, maybe 3 or 4, they don't like the gospel and country music. Not many African Americans either, just good ole boys and girls, some SO fat they were in wheelchairs and on those electric scooters. There was a good crowd and the children were singing and it was very pleasant and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I pray for rain, but hope it comes after the Boll Weevil Jamboree is over.

The old car show was nice too.

I think Randys' brother is in and out of court on a regular basis. Mostly dumb stuff like B&E and simple possession charges.

Heard there was a few fights last night at the BIG party in Marshvegas. Again the blacks destroy another good thing that the white people are trying to succeed at. Anyone want to disagree, I ask this, 1. Who organizes, sets up, and cleans up this event. Answer: The white people. 2. Who usually causes the disturbances. Answer: You know, of course. Why cant Margret control her people? They all come from her hood. She should be able to talk with them and educate them on how to act in public, do ya think.

When I was there, midday, there were no hispanics or many African Americans. I may have seen 5 or 6 Americans of African descent in the crowd. Saw several that had booths..........

So the trouble makers must have come out of the Casino on East Union Street??? Ya think?

I also heard there were a LOT of people there last night. Sign of the poor economic times, when times were good and people could afford to go out, the attendance was sparse. This was free entertainment, they could bring their own alcohol in their cars and drink it from a cup with no one knowing.

Hot times in the old town on Saturday night!
