Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, plus considering M.A.S.H was only a fictional program, but I think there was a bit of the late President and Supreme Allied commander Dwight D.Eisenhower in Harry Morgan's portrayal of Col. Sherman T. Potter. When Ike was at Walter Reed the last months of his life,he would have himself wheeled into the dining hall, and mingle with the active duty troops of all ranks. He, like Potter, felt at home with us despite having held high rank and two terms as President. I recall one evening, just making it under the wire for dinner, and I hadn't changed out of my Class A's, and Ike was surrounded by the enlisted men. I was sitting at a table for officers only, and attacking my dinner, when I heard that unmistakeable voice say;'Don't be a stand-off, Captain, join us,' but paused then added, 'Provided you don't chew too loud.' The laughter echoed through the nearly-empty hall.
