I bet he'd still be alive if he hadn't smoked.

We are sad, we really liked him!

His smoking had really nothing to do with it,in the end it was the life he lived. Most of us will never know the incredible stress that the skippers of the crab boats face, like deadlines, qutas, keeping the guys all safe, and making sure that they don't have a lot of dead loss, and keeping the boat running.I,am proud to say that phil did not live his life by what others told him,but reather by his own books. He was one of the best skippers, fathers, and friends to those who knew him.We come to know phil harris as well as joshua and jacob thru the t.v. screen but he will be forever missed and he is much loved by all the F/V CORNELIA MARIE FANS.Jake and josh you are never alone.we'll always stay true to you, wishing you the best..

From the article:

"Harris had battled health problems and was known to guzzle coffee and Red Bull while eating a poor diet and smoking. His son said Harris had tried to improve his health, but the effort proved too little and too late.

"He did cut back on energy drinks, quite a bit from what he'd usually do," says Josh, "but [doctors] have determined that smoking was the cause of this, and that was always his biggest habit. He had changed a lot of his habits but just could never kick the smoking. He started working with that electronic cigarette but, not used to it, he didn't know how to charge it. He just kept smoking."

He'll be missed.

I know his children will continue to run the boat, crab fishing is NOT like any other job you don't just quit, especially when the boat is family owned and operated. It's in their blood,it's what they live to do..

My dad died from a stroke aged 63.
He also was a smoker and although paralysed, his last words were "need smoke"

While we may disagre about his smoking, we're on the same track for the rest of your post. I'm sure his smoking didn't help but that is only part of the story. Phil was what he was, and that was a hell of a great man. I wish we hade more like him. I also wish his famly all the best. O>:~)

250,000 to 300,000 people die each day.

Tobacco use causes more than 5~8 million deaths per year.

Don't fear the Reaper.

Very Sorry for your loss. I bet your dad really did need that last smoke. Addicts have it rough. For his sake I hope he somehow got one last smoke. Yes, I'm an Anti. I hate tobacco smoke and what it does to smokers and others around them. 0>:-(
