An interesting and thoughtful review of Agora. Amenabar got a lot things right in his film, but also distorted a lot of history in service to his art. But that's what artists do and I don't fault him for that. Folks who are interested in the historical Hypatia should pick up the biography "Hypatia of Alexandria" by Maria Dzielska (Harvard University Press, 1995)- highly readable! Also I have a series of posts on my blog ( http://faithljustice.wordpress.com/ ) covering the historical events and characters depicted by the film - not a movie review, just a "reel" vs. "real" discussion.

I read your preview on Sunday, June 6, 2010 and somewhere in the article it says that it began showing on Friday, so I assumed June 4. I looked at the movie section and found that it was not showing anywhere. I then started investigating it on the internet and saw that it was released in 2009. Wha Hoppen? Why review something that is not available? After your splendid review, I was hat to trot to see it and nothing happened.
