How long does it take to become local?

Dec 23, 2012 Full story: Honolulu 232

It's always fun when national entertainment media tells stories about Hawaii. This October, Comedy Central broadcast an episode of South Park entitled "Going Native." In it, one of the young characters learns that, although his family now lives in Colorado, he was born in Hawaii.

Oh, don't be silly--we brownies KNOW not to call you haole to your face, just as you haoles know not to call blacks the N word. We know you are sensitive, and New Englander "lurker" is proving that beyond a doubt.

You call yourself "brownies"... That's pretty racist and sad, I would refer to you as an individual and/or a human being.

I'm not sensitive to it, I've been a minority in places I've lived. I'm just illustrating that it's racist.

BTW, yes. Whites DID get together and decided, not to enslave, but to overthrow the legitimate Hawaiian monarch at the time, Liliuokalani.
If you don't know--which you don't--maybe you should stop talking.
Actually, I came to this thread because I googled "Molokai Ranch" a few days ago to see if there were any new developments to the story since I was just on Molokai a few months ago... And I found these threads interesting.

I can assure you that I'm familiar with how Hawaii became a republic and then a territory. That story is noting new, governments kill and steal from people all the time, every government in the world has done this.

To be fair though, Hawaii's history before the whites polluted it as some would say, wasn't all sunshine and flowers, there was cannibalism, and royal elites on each island battling for power. It wasn't exactly a utopia. S amazing how history repeats itself since anthropologists thing the original "Hawaiians" came from Tahiti to escape oppression,

I guess race isn't a big issue to me, but I'm well traveled and I let go of cultural bigotry a long time ago when I was a teenager.

My point exactly. EVERY CULTURE IS RACIST in equal measure, and haoles feel it in Hawaii, therefore judge Hawaii to be a racist place. They don't recognize it in majority white places, but feel put upon when in Hawaii BECAUSE OF EXPERIENCES WITH A FEW INDIVIDUALS. It's like going to Tijuana, and thinking "This is what the rest of Mexico must be like."
BTW, my use of "brownie" is referential haoles referring COLLECTIVELY to Hawaiians as welfare collecting, Heineken drinking, child abusing abos.
Check the rest of the thread if you want clear evidence of anti-Hawaii stereotyping.
I wonder why your non-bigoted self eschews taking THEM to task.
Perhaps you are not as enlightened as you seem to profess.
Translation: You're blindly racist and a hypocrite.

I have seen that many people on here view people collectively. It's unfortunate. It does seem that a white person would feel it more in a place like Hawaii than in Wyoming, I do agree with you.

As far as me being a racist and a hypocrite, please show me where I have because because I have no idea who "them" is. I can only speak from my experience but whenever I've been to Hawaii, I've found most people to be friendly.... Less so in Honolulu, but that's common in cities in general.

If you want to just throw racist bombs, you can, but I think that gets one no where.

Your words, haole bigot:

"If you're white, you will never be a 'local.' If you are fresh off the boat from China of Thailand, they will assume you are "local"

"Yep, it's racist as hell. Look at the bumper stickers "keep hawaii hawaiian" what a bunch of Pacific KKK nonsense. Imagine if someone had a bumper sticker that said "Keep New Jersey White"

"many people think so out of island ignorance"
"I'm guessing you have been around the world from Kauai to Maui."
"it isn't used much out of fear of angering the Al Sharpton crowd."

You may strike a conciliatory tone now, but look where you came from just on this thread alone.

Shame on you for calling the kettle black.

It is true, what I described is common in Hawaii. It's just the way it is. It is also true that the way local racists talk about whites in Hawaii, they wouldn't dare talk about blacks that way. There are a lot of ignorant racists in Hawaii, just because I don't view people like that DOESN'T mean a lot of people in Hawaii do not. The evidence is crystal clear.

Go back an re-read your posts, you will see that you are the end who first engaged in childish and bigoted tactics. if you care so much, why don't you try to educate some misguided people in your district, but you already made your ignorant comments and its clear you don't care for whites.... Or blacks for that matter. Sorry, but we can't all look "islander" for you..

Not true. I hear "haole this haole that," every day in normal conversation and it doesn't bother me one bit. But then, I'm a grown-up and understand the context in which it's being used. But, don't blow smoke up my ass and tell me you mean it to mean, "foreigner", or "without breath" or some other bullshit. You say it to mean "Whitey." without taking responsibility for your racism. Just be honest about it and don't be a coward. We KNOW what you mean anyways, we're not stupid.

Joe,

He's obviously the local racist, check out post 110, the local racist said

"No, White Man. It would not.
What you fail to recognize is that anywhere in the USA, the White Man is not indigenous."

He's obviously not educated , he also refers to California as "KKKalifornia"

You see, as long as you look "islander" it's ok. He blames the "white man" for taking over Hawaii over a 100 years ago, but he doesn't hold the same resentment to Japanese who BOMBED his island. I personally wouldn't hold past aggression against anybody because I view people as individuals.

He also ignores the brutal history of Hawaii and that many residents of Hawaii had no problem killing, torturing, eating, and stealing from each other.

I guess it was a utopia before the white man showed up with our pick-up trucks from Alabama.

He very well may be the Mark Fuhrman of Honolulu.

It is reasonable to assume that if the evil white man didn't show up to Hawaii that they would probably be as poor as the Solomon Islands or they would have civil unrest as they had in Fiji in recent years.

So amusing! You vilify those who judge collectively, and advocate for judging people as individuals, yet your assertions smack of "they" and "them."
Check out your own posts. I consolidated them for your convenience.
Go right ahead being blind to your own hypocrisies.
Oh, wait. You don't need my permission to do that. It appears already entrenched in your psyche.
But you are certainly not unique in this thought process--it's quite common. Haole is as haole does.

I can respect this.
But I'm sure you're aware that Hawaii people give each other racial shots in the ribs all the time, and it has nothing even remotely to do with the same kind of racial hatred found on the mainland.
As I pointed out before, "locals" have intermarried so much, that it is impossible to not be related to someone with Haole blood. This is where the perceptions that Hawaii is more racist than the mainland fail in logical progression. Malihini are ignorant of the context, and therefore make judgment from ignorance. Lurker boy is a prime example. He think he know, but he don't know.
It's not about having Caucasian roots, it's about whether or not you have Hawaii roots, and whether you are respectful of others who do.
My first post stated that one can be accepted almost immediately if respectful and sincere, and I stand by that.

Respect is earned not automatically given just because youre "local" or have "Hawaii roots"....Hawaii is part of the US so those haoles have just as much a right to be here as anyone else..even the dickhead, condescending, obnoxious, rude, demanding, loud mouthed convertible driving types.

I agree they have the right to be here, just as they have the roght to be ignorant of their own hypocrisy.
Would you also agree that "locals" whatever that means, are within their rights to revile the dickhead, condescending, obnoxious, rude, demanding, loudmouthed convertible driving Haoles who expect respect without having to earn it?

Haoles? is "NOT" racist? Now it's gonna take 20 coats of spray on tanner with a mix of shoeshine for applicants to qualify for welfare if they hire you to be the social worker.
Man! they should hire you as a spokesmen and they just sure to make tanning booth sales go through the roof.
If you go to welfare, they not gonna give it to you if they don't think you local.
So if you look local and you talk local that still don't make you local, but at least you can eat.

But we need to grow our own food. Not depend on Obama to give us spare change. But I certainly will remember your comment, if I ever decide to run for president.

FIRST, they need to buy land to grow the food on, something very few of them want to do. It's too late now unless you want to rent some space from a Chinese guy that bought the land and is now sub-letting it out for four times what it's worth. Look at Kunia, where 5 acre plots were up for sale for farming. The smart people bought it, and now rent it out by the acre for 1,500 or more a month an acre. They aren't supposed to do it, but who enforces the rules?
