How long does it take to become local?

It's always fun when national entertainment media tells stories about Hawaii. This October, Comedy Central broadcast an episode of South Park entitled "Going Native." In it, one of the young characters learns that, although his family now lives in Colorado, he was born in Hawaii.

One can be accepted in Hawaii immediately if one is kind, respectful and considerate, no matter what color you are.
On the other hand, in Colorado, if you have brown skin you will always have to put up with the subtle racism that is "Rich, White America."

People of the same sex and people of different people have been holding hands in public for over forty years in the Denver area.

I would never assert that Hawaii is not racist, and would simply point out that Haoles who come here with preconceived notions notice how racism feels because it is their first time having to face the universal shhtiness of it all.
