How could a scene that "did not shown any explicit nudity" even be "close to pornographic"?

Can the very idea of "sex" be pornographic?

If so, isn't that rather Orwell's "1984"-ish?

(i.e. a "Thought Crime")

So America isn't the only country afraid of sex.

That scene was the funniest 2 minutes of television ever aired. The comic timing between the dialog and when the woman ejaculates and the sound that accompanied it, was nothing less than brilliant.

To the complainers: Be parents and stop complaining that the media should be required to babysit your children because you're too lazy to do it yourself. Ever hear of "Parental Controls"?

Californication is genius. It's one of our favorite grownup shows, and we can't wait for the next season.
Maybe there should be cable packages for religious and easily offended people so that they can surf the television channels without being offended.
Maybe those of us who have non-religious grownup taste can get our own cable package without the religious or silly programming that offends us.
Maybe people with small children should get rid of their televisions in order to totally protect their offspring from offensive programs.
Doesn't anyone else besides me ever get sick of being monitored and "protected" by people who have the sensitivities of children, with no real appreciation of art, and who lack all understanding of sex and other human conditions? God I'm sick of "moral" and "values-oriented" idiots.

If they had their way, Adults would have nothing to watch but kiddie krap like "Zoey 101" and "Hannah Montana."

Wait! I forgot. Those are verboten too now.

Me thinks californication being a pay tv program, one would expect such programming late night. Am I missing something or is this regular programming in New Zealand? Perhaps having having a different line-up than the US?

Nonetheless, I assume if programming is a concern having kids in the house one would look toward filtering rated (and unrated) content within the respective tuner. That I am sure is available in NZ or am I mistaken?

In Australia, Californication was the favorite topic of complaint by church groups. In Australia the program aired at 9.30pm, and it is well after the 8.30pm slot, but those people still complained. Sex is still a sensitive topic for free to air networks.

Even shows like Big Brother can't get away with explicit nudity or anything intimate - even after 11pm. Last year, a furore erupted over the Big Brother Up Late show, and complaints were received to have the show cancelled. This year, Big Brother is back, but there is no Up Late show after 11pm, all Australian free to air channels have devoted late night viewing to Guthy-Renker and its damned Pro-Activ acne treatment. I've never seen commercials that take hours.

HungLikeFly thinks Guthy-Renker anti-cellulite cream might show too much of the thigh... You should be ashamed of yourself watching that smut !

It's hard to escape Guthy-Renker, they have penetrated women's magazines with ads, and it's like home shopping pornography! Make it stop!

I would suppose that the parents or persons who complained would have said to their children or thought: Turning to a violent, war or movie channel. "Ah, here is a violent, killing women, war scene. Let's spend some time watching it. Come children, here is how adults behave! when they don't want you to watch a loving sexual scene. Yes this is much better to watch! Much better for you minds."
New Zealand has some of the same type of idiots who "just don't change channels".

Agreed from what I've seen that company has their hands in every fad exercise, cosmetic etc. Until now didn't know how widepsread being in another english speaking country. I wouldn't be surprised to see their 2am 1 hour commercial funk subtitled on a tv in tibet.

The scene aired after 10pm, yet the complainer said that he "had stumbled on the episode while trying to find something for his family to watch"???
Who watches TV, looking for a family show past 10 pm?
If your kid is allowed to stay up past 10 (assuming they're 10 + years old), then they've most likely seen much worse on the internet.

Widespread, definitely. They are like a virus.
For example, we have the Seven Network, which has how many other digital variants, I think three channels, and they all put on that bloody Guthy-Renker crap at the same time, so a person switches channels, there is the same Pro-Activ infomercial. And the other networks are the same, and I'm sure they have many good shows in their libraries.

I think they should get all those conservative religious groups and put them in one room, and make them watch non-stop Guthy Renker infomercials until they scream and speak gibberish.

YES! I'm so sick and tired of America's "culture war" that I sometimes find myself fantasizing about defection.

It isn't just the "moral" and "values-oriented" idiots on the political Right that are the problem; plenty of knee-jerk radical feminists and child advocates on the Left also contribute to America's philistinism and puritanism. When the Right and Left make political alliances on cultural issues, censorship ensues.

Don't even get me started on political correctness and what it has done to analysis of art and literature!
