Cagney and Lacey needs to be forever remembered as groundbreaking television, paving the way for other crime dramas that featured women in prominent roles, and as holding the distinction of being the first television show to be cancelled and to be reinstated in a network’s lineup, due to a grassroots write-in campaign by the audience. That has not been done again.
When an actress is known for a particular “signature” role in television it can be said that her acting was indeed memorable, her style was her own, and she truly “defined” the character. All three of these can be said about Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly, both multi-dimensional actresses whose talents lie in involving the viewer completely in her character, delivering flawless performances over and over again. If one does not believe that, they need only to look at the four Emmys Tyne Daly received and the two that Sharon Gless won. During the series’ six-year run, no other actress won in TVs Best Actress category and the show garnered a total of 14 Emmy wins.
The DVD was well worth the wait. It does not include standard or ordinary “extras,” such as “behind the scenes,” deleted scenes, etc. But, I think the two-part documentary which featured Sharon, Tyne, Barney Rosenzweig, and many others from the cast and crew was a much higher form of entertainment…and this would make perfect sense because C&L itself was neither standard nor ordinary.
I belong to a C&L group at Yahoo and we are trying to get the word out to promote sales of the dvd. The release of future seasons depends on the current performance of the first one. So, please, everyone, buy buy buy!
Thank you
