AN-124 Ruslan. Ruslan does not mean condor. It is a NATO designation for this Russian plane. This plane was named after a Russian folk hero name Ruslan. Name Ruslan has two proposed meanings: Lion, or lionlike and Russian land.

not sure why this is news

I'm all about hearing news like this. Maybe it isn't "NEWS"... but at least it isn't about death or health care.

BTW, that isn't a jet... that's a flying city... sheeesh!

ohhhh....well, it CAN be news because there are people, like my wife's boss, that saw it fly just west of downtown and go, "What the heck is that thing?" My wife called me and I told her what it was. This isn't a aircraft you see everyday around here, or in the US for that matter.

From Tulsa International Airport: Clarification: Just found out that the north observation area is permanently closed and that the south observation area is only open from sunrise to sunset."

I understand how it works, but it's hard to believe something that big can take off & stay up in the air! That's crazy! Great story, by the way.

A Co Worker and I just went and parked and watched for a while. Saw then refueling for a bit. Saw crew get on board around 1pm. This massive plane makes all the others look like little 2 seaters. The people looked like specs by it. We were over in the BizJet Hangar parking lot by Evelyn's and Mitsubishi. There were a few people over there. Clear view to the runway and not fighting to look over the terminals or buildings.

I saw this plane at the Indianapolis airport from the terminal. It was still a ways away and it is a massive plane. Impressive in the least. True this is not news to everyone but people may see it and be curious like I was the first time I saw it.

Oh another reason to thread crap is that there is no political or racial aspect to this to get everyone all worked up. So some will find this boring.

Minimum rollout at max weight is 10k feet. I bet this dude was a tad nervous landing it.

nunyer...nah. They had a nice headwind to help them slow down. It will really come in handy when they take off.

Awesome. It was great to see it especially how it dwarfs the other aircraft that taxi past.

(FYI correction... I believe it's "The Midlands" in England. It is not the name of a town or county or the like ... just what the British refer to as the region in the middle of England.)

I flew the B-52 for many years. We all thought it was a giant. Compared to the Antonov 124, it is a mere midget. The B-52 can take off at 500,000#. I understand the Antonov 124 can TO at over 1.6 million pounds. It is indeed interesting that their system can create great airplanes, and the 124 is one of them.

I got to see it's big brother the AN-225 about twenty years ago at OKC. Now that is a monster!
