The biggest drug abuse that Zambia faces is alcohol abuse amongst a high percentage of the working population. Every family in the country must be affected to some degree; with families in the rural areas being locked in poverty due to an inability of the husband to work and their early deaths. This extreme situation must be having a major impact on the Zambia's ability to develop and increase the standard of living and health of the population.
Teaching children about the dangers of drug abuse in children is a very positive step, but it must be focussed upon alcohol as a drug. Drunkenness is currently viewed as a positive, even macho state. To tackle to burden of alcoholism in Zambia this image has to be changed in people's minds. A good place to start is with children, but their parents need support too.
