Forty years ago, I was a SHAPE teletype "tape ape" at Prum Post, West Germany being our host, while facing the Evil Empire on the Eastern Front. Prum Post was a small signal station, located near the Losheim Gap on the Belgian border along the Siegfried Line. Too bad that CPO John Walker USN was selling signal key lists/codes to the Soviets; our signal equipment having been captured by the North Koreans aboard the USS Pueblo back in 1968. Thus, they were reading everything we sent, as we learned a couple of decades or so ago. Our KW-7 [with seven black plastic rotors] was based on the German Enigma coding machine. Every 24 hours, we would HJ at 2400 Zulu Grenich Mean Time, changing wire-plug blocks inside the backs of machines; hoping that, even with computers, that codes could not be broken in 24 hours.
