On Sunday (12 December 2010), Kosovo will be holding its first general elections since declaring its independence from Serbia in February 2008. Voters will be going to the polls to choose between 1,265 candidates from 29 political parties and independent lists to fill the 120-seat Kosovo Assembly. Kosovo-Serbs are constitutionally guaranteed ten of those seats. Serbia, which does not recognize Kosovo's independence, has called on Kosovo-Serbs not to participate in the general elections, stating that "conditions were not yet right." Not all politicians in Belgrade agreed with this move, however. Dragoljub Micunovic, a member of the Serbian President Boris Tadic's Democratic Party, supports Serb participation in Kosovo's elections. Micunovic told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik that "'the voice of Serbs must be heard, that is to say, there must be conditions for some decisions in Pristina to not be made without their consent.'" Former Serb foreign minister Vuk Draskovic, who is now leader of the Serbian Renewal Movement, believes that Kosovo-Serbs must participate in the general elections as well.

Slobodan Petrovic, leader of the Independent Liberal Party, was a member of the previous governing coalition with the Democratic Party of Kosovo and its leader, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Petrovic and his party have been heavily critisized by the Serb government in Belgrade for participating in Kosovo's national institutions. Petrovic, however, says his presence in the government has enabled him to improve the lives of Kosovo-Serbs with the kind of bread-and-butter issues that people notice in their everyday lives. "The best example of this, Petrovic says, is a freshly paved road between Gracanica and the village of Laplje, which had previously been in notoriously bad repair. Funds for the road, which came from Belgrade, had been poorly appropriated and the construction continuously stalled. But when he joined the government and got the Kosovar authorities involved, Petrovic was able to see to it that the road was completed."

Nebojsa Lekic, of the Serbian Party of Kosovo and Metohija, said in a debate that Kosovo-Serbs must vote in elections tomorrow, for it is "...'the only way to have our voices and concerns heard at the central [national] level, and not just locally.'" Radomir Dimic, of the citizens list Wing Nation, stated that "'we are fighting for a multi-ethnic European values, but also for the dignity of the Serbian community in Kosovo. We are talking about the multi-ethnic principles of the Ahtisaari plan, and whether it is implemented sufficiently.'" Dimic said that Wing Nation supports the reconciliation of all the peoples Kosovo, and that this citizens list includes non-Serbs as well. Sasa Djokic, of the Serbian Democratic Party of Kosovo and Metohija, stated that the party will strive to prevent corruption, bribery and autocracy. "'Our slogan is time for change, and we know who is changing, the one who has absolute power. As for the Albanians, the SDS will strive for peace and reconciliation. We offer a hand of reconciliation.'"
