What I want to know is, are any tax dollars behind this? How are the various organizations involved funded? And oh by the way, does Orlando really have a problem attracting tourists??

I have read reports that folks have been cutting back on vacations due to the economy. It is rather well-known that gays and lesbians have billions in descretionary income. All tourist areas have tax dollars alloted to tourist bureaus, and I am sure Orlando is no excepiton. So what? If they bring in more tourists, that means more income, and more taxes paid. Since being gay or lesbian is not illegal, and the gay games are known world-wide, and would bring in foreign tourists as well, whats the problem? Are you against Orlando getting the gay games, and you can't go, or what? After all, you don't even live there, going by your ISP location.

I do live in Central Florida and gay has nothing to do with it. I'm just against stupid wastes of money. Attracting tourists to Orlando is like attracting moths to a flame. It's not needed.

Fine with me. I wouldn't go to Florida anyway. But every tourist trap city is constantly trying to increase the flow of tourists. More people, more money. Try telling elected politicians, hotel and motel operators, restaurants, and other tourist businesses that you don't want them to increase business, and see how far you get. I guarantee, not far.

I predict the 2018 Gay Games will be awarded to a gay marriage state; not to a gay hate state
.
Florida has until the 2014 deadline to get it together

These days I would suggest that be a requirement to even apply for the games. If not marriage, at the very least Civil Unions.

I'm not homophobic or anti-gay in the slightest, but this thread is just SCREAMING for us to come up with some athletic events appropriate to the participants.

How about naked tag team wrestling while covered in baby oil?

Ah, lacking a sense of humor. Laugh at yourself once in a while. Have a little fun. Gay Games sounds like a lead-in to an Eddie Murphy skit.
