Is Smoking Tougher on Women?

Women may be more vulnerable than men to the carcinogens and other noxious substances in cigarette smoke, a growing body of research suggests.

This is interesting, if narrow. The focus on lung cancer--or cancer in general--degrades the credibility of the premise suggested in the title.

Cancer is only a part of the health risk associated with smoking. Other research has suggested that women are less susceptible than are males to heart problems from exposure to SHS and other environmental smoke. If that is true--and if it also applies to active smoking--then there is no across-the-board gender bias in susceptibility to tobacco smoke.

Beijing Daily also reports that Beijing health authorities found more evidence of the link during a 5-year research project. They found the same proportion of women who cook suffer lung cancer as women who smoke.

Now perhaps one of the anti-smoking fanatics will tell us all about their precious studies involving LUNG cancer that they love to toss out... that took this obvious fact into consideration when they made up their statistics?

What use are statistics that ignore the obvious?

How many LUNG cancers that were blamed on SHS were actually caused by cooking?
