Surayud And Abdullah Want Row Over Tom Yam Kung To Stop

By D. Arul Rajoo

BANGKOK, Nov 23 (Bernama)-- The latest row between Malaysia and Thailand over claims that Tom Yam Kung restaurants in Malaysia are supporting insurgent movements in south Thailand were put to rest after Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont called his Malaysian counterpart Wednesday.

Surayud told reporters here Thursday that he and Abdullah agreed that the issue would not affect the relationship between both neighbours and hoped to resolve it amicably without going to the press.

"I called him yesterday and explained about the issue. He (Abdullah) said he has no problem with that," Surayud said after chairing a special Cabinet meeting to discuss the unrest in the Muslim-majority provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

The meeting was held immediately after returning back from his maiden visit to Myanmar since taking office on Oct 1, following the ouster of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Surayud, who had introduced various measures to restore peace in the south using a non-military approach, claimed on Tuesday that a network of Tom Yam Kung restaurants in Malaysia was the funding source for the southern militants.

Surayud said the issue of Tom Yam Kung restaurants funding insurgent movement affecting bilateral ties did not arise as both of them had discussed it during their talk in Putrajaya last month.

"Prime Minister Abdullah said it was not a problem for him as we had discussed it before. We agreed to continue with our effort to solve the conflict in a smooth manner," he added.

Surayud said he and his counterpart also agreed not to discuss the matter through media anymore and asked the cooperation from the media personnel not to ask about the issue.

An association representing Thai restaurant owners in Malaysia had said that the Pattani United Liberation Organisation (Pulo) used to extort money from its members to fund their separatist activities in southern Thai but had stopped it now.

Pulo emerged in the 1970's during the armed struggle by ethnic Malays in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat seeking independence from Thailand.

Peace was restored in the last decade but more than 1,800 people had died since separatists launched a campaign of bombings and shootings in January, 2004.
