Indonesia says to launch bird flu pandemic plan

“In such a situation, hundreds of thousands would die”

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia, which has the highest death toll from bird flu of any country, will launch a plan later this week to deal with a possible influenza pandemic, officials said on Monday.

Heru Setijanto, head of surveillance and monitoring at the national commission for bird flu control, said the plan would be followed up a week later by a three-day pandemic simulation involving several villages on the resort island of Bali.

In the case of a pandemic, an estimated 5 million Indonesians could be infected with the virus, he said, adding that of those infected, between 5 and 10 percent would die. Read more

The current Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of the HP-H5N1 (Fujian Strain) virus in Indonesia is over 80%.

While some scientists believe that the H5N1 virus will loose or trade virility for transmissability, meaning that the CFR will weaken as the virus becomes easily transmitted from human-to-human, there is no concrete evidence to sustain this belief. In fact, evidence shows that through reassortment, the CFR will probibly remain at 80%.

If Indonesia believes that 5 million people will be infected with the H5N1 virus during a pandemic, they better plan for 4 million deaths.

And they announce a new bird flu plan every few months.

They haven't sent samples for well over a year.

Unfortunately the health minister just announced that they will no longer be reporting human infections because it does not benefit Indonesia to do so.

They say they will only report cases once every six months.

So now not only do we not know what mutations are taking place in the virus we will not even know how many human cases there are - not that their reporting has been accurate in the past few months.

The Indonesian government needs assistance to fight the H5N1 virus and this certainly isn't the way to go about getting it.
