The Long Run - In '74 Thesis, the Seeds of McCain's War Views

John McCain arrived at Clark Air Base in the Philippines on March 14, 1973. The time he spent as a prisoner in North Vietnam helped mold his views on war policy and conduct that he discussed later in a thesis.

Mr. McCain is more than half right. He identifies a real problem: Prisoners increased susceptibility to pressure from their captors, because of increased knowledge that the Vietnam Wasr was illegal and wrong.

McCain then goes off the reservation, and advocates a sort of "Why We Fight" series to justify wrong wars.

Far better if America
1) Live up to its promise, and engage in just wars: defensive, and never colonial.( The war in Vietnam was, at heart, not for Communism, but for national freedom from colonial powers.

2) Makes it basic military policy to concentrate more on policy instructing active soldiers to avoid political activity altogether, instead of worrying who they sleep with. It is nearly impossible to do a proper soldierly job if you have reason to question your mission.

From his viewpoint, his argument is perfectly logical; not having understood the nature of the war, he blames "divisive forces, " and "anti-war movement" rather than the top of his own chain of command.
