Northern Galilee Bethlehem makes sense - it is near Nazareth 7km by donkey. And inhabited post-exile.

Southern Bethlehem makes no sense - it is 150km away from Nazareth ! And was not yet recolonized.

But the southern Bethlehem was contrived to link-in with presumed prophecy to give extra legitimacy to Jesus' kingship bid.

"...I researched the archaeological evidence for Bethlehem in Judea at the time of Jesus and found nothing. This was very surprising, as Herodian remains should be the first thing one should find. What was even more surprising is what archaeologists had already uncovered and what I was to discover over the next 11 years of excavation at the small rural site--Bethlehem of Galilee.
The IAA stopped the excavations in 2006, citing a lack of funding; right now nobody's investing in any more digs at the Bethlehem of the Galilee. Oshri doesn't think any new evidence would change anything anyhow. "I don’t think it will make a difference to people,”Oshri told the London Times.“Christianity is leaning on the Old Testament, and in the Old Testament the Messiah should come from the house of David and Bethlehem near Jerusalem."

This raises all sorts of problems, not least with scansion and overall feel: "O little tiny municipality of Bethlehem ...." The other important thing is that 150 km ride on the donkey to the one Bethlehem or the 7 km ride to the other Bethlehem. In the first case, Mary's ass would be in serious jeopardy of crashing, to say nothing of the poor donkey, and l'il Baby Jesus would probably have been born in the saddle. The second case makes a lot more sense. Of course that's what Satan wants you to believe, that sonofabitch, although it's not clear why The Evil One really gives a shit, right? He's having a ball in Syria and in the US, with his shadow organization the NRA. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like Lucifer gave up dicking around with Christians centuries ago (too boring, too easy, agent's fee too high) and just went freelance. People want to know about this crap.
