One of the original advocates for the environment, at least in the USA, was Alan Chadwick. He, almost single-handedly, introduced the concept of organic gardening and farming to the country back in the late sixties and early seventies. Yes, other voices had been there in the background, but Alan demonstrated in practical terms that it can work.
