Amid Immigration Debate, Mexico Barbie Sparks Outrage

The doll comes with a Chihuahua and a passport.

By Cathy Rainone

Mattel has introduced "Mexico Barbie" as part of its "Dolls of the World" iconic series.

The newest addition to Mattel’s iconic Barbie doll collection has stirred up controversy.

As part of its Dolls of the World series, the company introduced a new Mexico Barbie doll, which comes with a Chihuahua figure and a passport.

Although every doll in the series comes with a passport, critics say the inclusion of a passport with the Mexico Barbie is culturally insensitive in light of the current immigration debate that affects millions of Mexicans in the United States, according to NBC’s Today show.

“The folks over at Mattel are so smart that not only they have come up with a Mexico Barbie, but they have given her all the possible tools to go around the world undisturbed,” journalist Laura Martinez wrote mockingly on her blog. "Play with your Barbie Mexicana and don't even think of calling her indocumentada (undocumented)."
Time for a rant...

I really don't know what is that so appeal many Mexican to go to the USA to be treated like shit.

"to go around the world undisturbed"... We Mexicans GO around the world undistubed!! We do not need visas to go to Europe, for example, last time that I checked.

The USA and some kind of Mexicans... guess they have their very special relationship. Guess that by now, they understand each other very well: The Mexican is viewed and treated like shit, and even is expected to say "thanks" (and it does!!)

I just hope that it never contaminates our relationship with other countries of the world.

See why I jump of happiness when I know that we increasingly trade much more with Asia, Russia, Europe, the Arab World, Iran, China, whatever?...

Not all Mexicans want to enter this shitty relationship. And we will NOT.

I thought this was about a doll...anyway, it is not the first Mexican Barbie...there are many over the years...collectables, that is all, and why ruin it for the kids. I remember having a collection of dolls that my parents picked up for me when we went on family vacations,(not Barbie), but each one represented a different Indian tribe from the area. I cherished those dolls and learned a little about the culture of each tribe.I even had my dad take me to the library to find books on Indian history and art. I think those dolls can still be found at tourist stops across the country. Or, maybe they are not pc either these days.
We are so sensitive now that we cannot risk learning something or appreciating the beauty and diversity of a culture and just let our imaginations take us across borders and oceans to explore. I feel fortunate to still see with those child eyes.
I get enough politics and probing critical questions from people daily about being married to a Mexican immigrant. I listen to ignorant comments on how difficult it must be to have to learn enough spanish to communicate with my husband and live with the cultural differences...I am immersed in the diversity and enriched by the experience.
