The private confessional protected many criminals.

At one time confession was a public affair, so there was no such issue as a secret.
>>>>>>> >>>>>>> >>>>>>> >>>>>>> >>>>>>> >>>>>>> >>>>

AMONG Catholics, confession has changed dramatically over the centuries. In the early years of the Catholic Church, confession and penance were required only for serious sins. Concerning this, the book Religion in the Medieval West says: "Until the late sixth century the penitential system was very harsh: the sacrament could be administered only once in a lifetime, confession was public, the penance was long and severe."

How severe was such penance? In 1052 one penitent was required to walk barefoot all the way from Bruges in Belgium to Jerusalem! "Catholics could still be found in 1700 at holy wells and springs, kneeling up to their necks in icy water to say their penitential prayers," says the book Christianity in the West 1400-1700. Since at that time absolution was withheld until after the completion of the penance, many delayed their confession until they were dying.

When did the modern practice of confession begin? Religion in the Medieval West states: "A new form of penance was introduced in France in the late sixth century by Celtic monks.... This was auricular confession, in which the penitent confessed his sins privately to a priest, and it was an adaption of the monastic practice of spiritual counselling." According to the older monastic practice, the monks confessed their sins to one another to get spiritual help in order to overcome their weaknesses. In newer auricular confession, however, the church claimed for the priest the much greater "power or authority to forgive sins."-New Catholic Encyclopedia.

It doesn't work that way, June. I never said it did.
The excommunication is automatic. No one has to 'pronounce' it. In this case it is de facto.
If the person repents and goes to confession, the priest can lift the excommunication at that time. No one is "changing their mind". It is dependent upon the person to realize the gravity of their action and, hopefully, come to repent of it and seek God's forgiveness. As I said before, it's a remedial action.
Project Rachel is there to help bring healing from the suffering and devastation abortion inflicts on the "other" victims, those who have been duped into thinking it isn't murder, that it's nothing more than a "choice".
Don't be so silly.

Catholic Encyclopedia

Excommunication (Latin ex, out of, and communio or communicatio, communion — exclusion from the communion), the principal and severest censure, is a medicinal, spiritual penalty that deprives the guilty Christian of all participation in the common blessings of ecclesiastical society. Being a penalty, it supposes guilt; and being the most serious penalty that the Church can inflict, it naturally supposes a very grave offence.

This is the Roman Catholic Church.........

All Who Separate From the Control of the Pope are Without Christ

"Remember and understand well that where Peter is, there is the Church; that those who refuse to associate in communion with the Chair of Peter belong to Antichrist, not to Christ. He who would separate himself from the Roman Pontiff has no further bond with Christ." Pope Leo XIII, Satis Cognitum, quoted in "Acts of Leo XIII: Supreme Pontiff", Rome: Vatican Press, 1896,(quoted in Apostolic Digest, by Michael Malone, Book 4: "The Book of Christians", Chapter 4: "There is No Allegiance to Christ Without Submission to the Pope").

From the book,“CONFESSIONS of a FRENCH CATHOLIC PRIEST … edited by Samuel F. B. Morse, A. M.… published in 1837 by John S. Taylor, New York, comes the following………….

It is natural, after this picture, to inquire if Catholic priests go themselves to confession, and if they avow all their crimes; to this I answer,-They are obliged to go to confession every fortnight, or at least once in three weeks, because their Superiors make inquiries about that point very carefully; and it is an eminent recommendation to the Superiors to apply often and to the celebrated confessors. Many of the priests make their whole faith to consist in efficaciousness to the confession, and they avow all their crimes to their confessor the same day in which they commit them. They believe firmly, that because a man whom they know as vicious as themselves has pronounced upon their head those words “Ego te absolvo,”—“I absolve thee,” in extending their hand, they believe their sins all blotted out, their conscience whitened and pure, and on the same evening they renew again the same crimes.

This is the Roman Catholic Church.....how sad. And they will tell the world they do not worship Mary........

"Mary is the Virgin most faithful who by her fidelity to God makes good the losses caused by Eve's unfaithfulness. She obtains fidelity to God and final perseverance for those who commit themselves to her. For this reason St. John Damascene compared her to a firm anchor which holds them fast and saves them from shipwreck in the raging seas of the world where so many people perish through lack of such a firm anchor.'We fasten souls,' he said,'to Mary, our hope, as to a firm anchor.' It was to Mary that the saints who attained salvation most firmly anchored themselves as did others who wanted to ensure their perseverance in holiness.

"Blessed, indeed, are those Christians who bind themselves faithfully and completely to her as to a secure anchor! The violent storms of the world will not make them founder or carry away their heavenly riches. Blessed are those who enter into her as into another Noah's ark! The flood waters of sin which engulf so many will not harm them because, as the Church makes Mary say in the words of divine Wisdom,'Those who work with my help - for their salvation - shall not sin.' Blessed are the unfaithful children of unhappy Eve who commit themselves to Mary, the ever-faithful Virgin and Mother who never wavers in her fidelity and never goes back on her trust. She always loves those who love her, not only with deep affection, but with a love that is active and generous. By an abundant outpouring of grace she keeps them from relaxing their effort in the practice of virtue or falling by the wayside through loss of divine grace." St. Louis de Montfort, in Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin,#175.

AIDS has quietly caused the deaths of hundreds of Roman Catholic priests in the United States although other causes may be listed on some of their death certificates, the Kansas City Star reported today. The newspaper said its examination of death certificates and interviews with experts indicates several hundred priests have died of AIDS-related illnesses since the mid-1980s. The death rate of priests from AIDS is at least four times that of the general population, the newspaper said. Kansas City Bishop Raymond Boland says the AIDS deaths show that priests are human.

The Roman Catholic Church....sad. Really sad.

Don Andrea Gallo, a religious LGBT advocate in Italy, has said a homosexual pope would be ‘wonderful’.

‘A homosexual pope would be a wonderful thing,’ he told Italy’s Radio 24.‘There is equality of the children of God. It is the essence of the Gospel, we are all sons and daughters of God.’

Gallo added:‘A homosexual priest should be free to express his or her identity and her sexuality, otherwise it represses and becomes pedophilia.’

In the interview, Gallo also revealed a bishop attempted to sexually assault him when he was a young priest.

When asked what he would do if he was pope, Gallo said he would send ‘all the priests away’ and preach Christianity on the street.

Gallo would also allow women to become priests, as he believes they are not inferior to men.

Last week, it was reported the recently retired Pope Benedict XVI would live with his private secretary Georg Gänswein – who is also rumored to be his secret boyfriend.

The choices for the next pope, however, all appear to be anti-gay.

Current favorite Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson has defended ‘Kill The Gays’ laws, saying it is part of African culture.

Another favorite, the Archbishop of Milan Angelo Scola, has also condemned homosexuality, as well as abortion and feminism.

The Vatican has yet to announce when they will begin discussing who will be the next pope, but it is thought 11 March is a possible start date.

The Roman Catholic Church....read this carefully. Who do they declare as redeemer of the human race?
Sick and sad......

"As she suffered and almost died together with her suffering and dying Son, so she surrendered her mother's rights over her Son for the salvation of the human race. And to satisfy the justice of God she sacrificed her Son, as well as she could, so that it may justly be said that she together with Christ has redeemed the human race." Pope Benedict XV, in Inter Sodalicia, Apostolic Letter of March 22, 1918.

The Church Teaches, published by the Jesuit fathers of St. Mary's College, bears the Imprimi Potest, Nihil Obstat, and Imprimatur of the Catholic Church, pages 210-211.

Wrong again--as usual June!! Salvation is the "call of the faithful" in Jesus Christ (in and through) His One True Apostolic Catholic Church---the Bride of Christ.--Your own "self-opinionated" life, is the call of the wild, a repeat story of the Prodigal son in Luke 15:11---rebellious, defiant and ignorantly misled!!!

Don Andrea Gallo is a "left wing liberal priest" who has "zero credibiblity" when it come to spreading his own "editorialized personal opinions" regarding the Catholic Church..... All "anyone" has to do is examine the media sources (who seek him out)--and (who he seeks out) in his attempt to spread his "liberal propaganda", including the Rolling Stone Magazine, a liberal extremist and controversial publication and Pink News, an "openly" gay perverted magazine that "no one" with any intrensic moral values would give (2 seconds)of their time to read. Both of these magazines have about as much credibility as reading the "National Inquirer. It only goes to show OLDJG, how "desperate" you have become is spreading your own "snake oil" vengeance and "in digging up" whatever (remote) anti-catholic "trash sources" you can find, against Jesus Christ HIMSELF and HIS One (and only one TRUE) Apostolic Catholic Church.

The issue was Kay's assertion (and yours I presume) that we don't need to confess to anyone but God. I proved that assertion wrong. Let's agree to the biblical command to confess our sins to one another and not to God only shall we?
If you want to discuss confessing to a minister of the Church we can go there afterwards.
confessing to a minister/priest etc. is a waist of time, the book of timothy proves that.no confession is valid unless it is done directly to jesus, fore there is no man that comes between god an man except jesus.confession was created by the church inhopes that after you confess you'll drop a dollar or two in the collection box on your way out.

Bishop Robert J. McManus, head of the Diocese of Worcester, was arrested for driving under the influence this weekend after police stopped him in Narragansett, R.I., police said.

McManus was arrested at 10:32 p.m. Saturday on charges of drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and refusing a chemical test, Narragansett Police Captain Sean Corrigan said. McManus is to be arraigned Tuesday in district court in Wakefield, R.I.

The point is that Jesus didn't want us to go through our lives burdened down with this worry. So we confess with our mouths to a priest who has been given the authority to forgive sins, and then we (if he senses we are contrite) hear the words of absolution and are in no doubt of our forgiveness. It's an immense relief.
Another benefit of confessing to a priest is that one must take a closer look at their sinful nature in the very act of verbalizing it and so one is more inclined to put a better effort into avoiding that sin the next time around.(Who really wants to go have to confess THAT one again?)
However, confessing directly to God alone, does not afford the same "bonus". One can just confess their sins in general and gloss over their specifics. You know we humans have a great capacity to think we are better than we really are.
this is a false teaching of the pagan/christian church 1 timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;....if what you say is true then that means the bible is wrong and according to legend the bible is infallible....so who is wrong the bible? or the pagan/christian church?

You and Kay say confess to God alone. We no need no stinkin' priest.
Jesus says "If you forgive sins they are forgiven, if you retain them they are retained". Obviously they need to know the sin in order to forgive them.
St. James says "confess your sins to one another."
I guess you two know better. Good luck.
st. james is wrong the book 1 timothy 2:5 proves that, i doubt st. james said "confess your sins to one another."that would be going against gods will.
