If the Pope is the RCC chief and has total authority over the RCC and he decides to resign,why can't he appoint his own successor instead of having itdone by the Cardinals? If youhave total authority over the RCC, don't he have authority and say so over who he wants to succeed him?
He doesn't have "total authority" over the RCC. For instance, he cannot introduce doctrine on his own, etc.
