Have you taken your medication yet?
Hydrochloric acid and tablespoons as some sort of example in support of your argument. Yeah, that was real good.
Will reading a book experience you with how it is to be burned?
Once you have been burned by something, you don't need to be burned by everything to know it can kill you, unless you are a complete and total idiot. Not to mention, exploding isn't just "burning," it's exploding, and you'd be luck to survive it.

Reading a book won't fix the car, but it will help to give me the knowledge required to fix it. Learning what other people have discovered means I don't have to waste my time repeating the mistakes they made. Of course, it is good to do the experiments or demonstrations, but ignoring the work that others have done is, literally, ignorance.
Now, at the edge of knowledge, it works a bit differently: you provide your observations and hypotheses and others provide their and then you discuss to see which hypothesis fits best and how to test it further. You still need to read what others have done to keep up, but always with an awareness that they can be as wrong as you are and that we are all simply attempting to understand the universe.
The fact that you refuse to look at what others have done means you will always be behind. I can assure you that your heroes Faraday and Maxwell were very aware of the experiments of Ampere, Watt, Ohm, and others.
:-)

Nice post about the existence of books.

I can't resist it.

That is why they made Bibles and other religious texts.:-)

I have read lots and lots and lot of books. Especially manuals. Then I dug in and did the dirty work and discovered some things they didn't cover. They can't cover everything.

That is how I came to see similar patterns.

One thing I have noticed is the detailed descriptions of manuals has diminished over the years as things became more integrated. Plus the language difficulties as manufacturing went overseas. You replace sections now instead of repairing the components. I started in the old days, that is why you see me getting into minute details versus the blanket stuff you work with. I spent 47 weeks of concentrated tech school learning to read schematics, tracing out very complex electromagnetic analog circuitry, with the attendant mechanical aspects of those relay and motors, which affects timing and operation. Lots and lots and lots of parallel and series circuits, with lots and lots and lots of possible paths set up.

You didn't replace a card to see if it fixed the problem. You had to find it and fix it. I was trained to think in details. You and the rest on here think in blocks of info, and not really knowing how the blocks work.

I'm quite familiar with the usefulness of books, Poly.

Einstein got his smarts from sitting in a patent office and reading the theories and applications that crossed his desk, then thinking and coming up with his own theories. Some of which is wrong. Why no grand unification theory.

He read. He thought.

You just read.

Depressing.

One of my customers was a lifer prison for women in FL. God, I hated going into that place. These were women doing serious time for crimes up to murder. Staffers told me the overwhelming amount of cases involved drugs and abuse. Women being dependent on as*holes and being abused and exploited. And lost. No opportunity to make choices, really. Beaten right out of the gate.

How is your ideal atheist societies going to restrict drugs and bad behavior among men with just words written on paper? No higher authority looking down when you are out of sight of the cops?

You should give it a try.

It is interesting how so many of you Topix atheists don't read entire posts, or just blank out portions so you can respond with stupidity.

Yes. You do it a lot.

Reading is just storing information, you silly goose. It has to be processed to be put to use.

I think he meant storing 'data' to be processed into 'information' at a later date.

Data is useless to us until processed into information.

Is that all that keeps you from breaking the law, Davey?

The belief that you're always being watched?

That's pretty pathetic, Davey.

No, they're obviously more complex than YOU can understand. "It's too complex and I can't understand it so it must have been made by my invisible god thingy." he whines!!!! Science is just a little bit ahead of you here, they actually understand things that you remain credulous over.
I've never said that, nor have I implied it. That's YOUR assertion about theists.

It is very complex and I don't pretend o understand it all, I am by no means a biologist.

But I'd imagine that changing spark plugs is too complex for some biologists to do, so they hire it done.

To each his own.
Nothing "random" about it. They combine in a very complex and exacting fashion. Either that or a magical being scooped up some dirt and blew on it and out popped a fully formed male.....hummmm tough choice here, but since I refuse to believe in magic, I'll take complex chemicals mixing in just the right environment, especially since many of those elements are what make up all stars. A star exploded, and strews its essence into the universe, over and over again, and you think life began with a scoop of dirt....REALLY NOW!!!!! HUMMMM
Put your mouth around my rod and keep humming..... That's all you're doing, blackie, wasting your time with your petty, childish, nonstop insults.

No, it isn't. That is where yo go south in your thinking.

Reading is a motor skill. It just translates symbols into words. It takes "thinking" to turn those words into concepts or knowledge. Some things can be processed on the fly, and others take some consideration. Depends on the complexity of the info.

You have sure taken aptitude and other tests in school. Maybe you recall the sections called "reading and comprehension"? Yours probably had something like a 45% percentile next to it, just to jog your memory.

Note the two different words? Are you capable of grasping the significance of that extra word comprehension?

Think about it.

Actually Dave specifically said the best way to learn is to hurt yourself, suffering body breaking injuries not books is the way to learn.

2. No. Learn to live with it.

3. "force"? It cannot be forced.
