Oh yes - get mint flavour lip balm. Mint helps ease the itch. Yes, I do have ointments and herbs, but when sleeping at some other place, it is nice to have something with you that can double as ointment!

Double Fine wrote: <quoted text> From Cape Town to Cairo? You know, I believe that is exactly what she did. Took her three years. I couldn't do it! She was sooo tough - and dainty! I had the pleasure of traveling with her in Central America. Wow. Got us low prices quickly. And she knew horses! She could read them with ease. She was a professional horse trainer.

Double Fine wrote: <quoted text> Well, most lions have a fear of man, because a lot of tribes (the Masai being the most famous) have a rite of passage into manhood of killing a male lion. Lions therefore, avoid humans where they can. In Africa, mosquitos are the biggest killer. Second is snakes. The Black Mamba is the most feared animal on the continent. Get bitten and it is basically over within 20 minutes. That is just one specie. Puff Adder, Gaboon Viper, Green Mamba, Coral Snake, Boomslang and a whole host of Cobras (Cape Cobra, Bush Cobra, Egyptian Cobra, Mozambique Spitting Cobra, Banded Cobra etc) are also found on the continent. Avoid Elephants. Avoid Black Rhino's. Avoid a Gemsbok/Oryx. Avoid Hippo's. Avoid Nile Crocs. Further to Buck's and Hiding's grammar discussions, why mosquitos "are" but snakes "is"?

Unless I am the only person around, I never need bug spray. Mosquitos find me (or my blood) unpalatable, and will completely avoid me while others are getting bitten up. I have been naturally selected for immunity from mosquito bites!!

You are either naive and ignorant or a complete and total wuss. Forgive me for being a skeptic. I know that’s a trait you atheist embrace. Maybe it did happen as you say. I just have problems believing. I just can’t imagine anyone in their right mind hitchhiking with complete strangers. Nor can I imagine anyone picking up a hitchhiker. It’s totally insane and beyond any reason. There was a time in American History it was common place. But in the last 40 years it has not been a safe practice. It is a sure way to get yourself murdered. I have heard of people traveling around in Europe on foot and backpack. I'm sure it has happened here but it's just not a common thing.

Then it would be safe to assume you have lived a sheltered life. It is not uncommon, nor is my story unique. I am one of thousands of US citizens to take to the road in such a manner, and that's just the people I know about, there are probably closer to millions throughout history. The reason you cannot fathom it is because you have not done it. As for it being less safe today, you are dead wrong, violent crimes have been on a steady decline the last 40 years, and between 1970 and 1980 was the most rapid decline in violent crimes. This is literally the safest time in history and we keep getting safer in the non-religious areas, sadly there is a slight increase in the fundy states that keeps us from dropping below the 1% violent crime rate, but one day we will get it that low. You are more likely to have your bank account robbed than to be assaulted physically, based on FBI reports. You even have a greater chance of being hit by lightening than being killed today. I recommend you don't test me on this matter lest I consider you nothing more than a complete and total conspiracy nut job.
