I would take it a bit farther, those who go out of their way, even unto deceitful measures, to attack those who have different 'principles'.
Agreed.

Sure.
It is possible, based on Tacitus, that Nero burned thousands of alleged Christians. It is also possible that Tacitus was wrong.
Unlike you, I don;t have an agenda.

Just want to propose a question over here. I have found myself in a discussion on another thread about the term fundie. I have never actually called someone a fundie on here other than BB (and he thanked me) some time ago, but I often times think it in my head. I tend to scroll by their posts, as trying to have a discussion with them is like talking to a brick wall in my opinion. The people that I apply the term to, come from all walks.
It has been called to my attention that one should not apply the term fundie to an atheist. May I ask for personal opinions as to why or why not?
I am not trying to be disrespectful, just trying to clear up my own thought process. Thank you in advance for taking my question as an honest one.
I'd say if you want to apply the term fundie to an atheist when they display the same closed-minded attitude of a religious fanatic, you're free to do so.

I know I have, they love it.

Atheist: What’s this fly doing in my soup?
Waiter: Praying.
Atheist: Very funny. I can’t eat this. Take it back.
Waiter: You see? The fly’s prayers were answered.
GOD IS GREAT!
Do flies have a savior-fly who died for the sins of all flies?

Did the fly-god create flies in his own image?

Help us wise clownie.

Of course it is just one person's opinion...but isn't all beliefs or lack of beliefs...just an opinion? None of us have any proof...just a personal opinion.
It is when we try to pass our personal opinions off as "truth" that one becomes "fundamentalist"...a t least in my opinion.
Some will come here and declare they have "proof" that God exists...other will come and say they have "proof" that God doesn't exist...I think IMO that they are both behaving as fundamentalists.
The problems IMO don't lie with what one believes or doesn't believe...it lies in how those beliefs or lack of beliefs is used to control or condemn others.
Ya know...we don't have to agree on any of this...it is ALL just one's own opinion.
I agree 100%

I think the terms Atheism and Atheist Fundamentalism are being confused.
I think there are a few atheists that have an agenda with core principles. Not that all atheists do.
That was my thinking. The person that I am having the discussion with is not one that I would consider in that light. I question if he is aware though, that they are out there. The post was very cut and dried in the aspect of one should not call/consider an atheist, a fundamentalist.

I think if the term could apply, it would be towards the gnostic atheist, who openly states that he doesn't have a theistic belief there are gods, and goes one step further, stating that he believes there are no gods, and disallows the possibility that there could be such an "entity", by whatever description can be imagined or encountered in the universe.
Those are pretty rare beasts, and I'll add much rarer than fundamentalist theists, mainly due to the fact that is a widely held position within theism of all flavors.
That is what I am talking about ;O)

For someone who loves "new country"/"country rock" as much as I do, I've never gone line dancing.
