Just want to propose a question over here. I have found myself in a discussion on another thread about the term fundie. I have never actually called someone a fundie on here other than BB (and he thanked me) some time ago, but I often times think it in my head. I tend to scroll by their posts, as trying to have a discussion with them is like talking to a brick wall in my opinion. The people that I apply the term to, come from all walks.
It has been called to my attention that one should not apply the term fundie to an atheist. May I ask for personal opinions as to why or why not?
I am not trying to be disrespectful, just trying to clear up my own thought process. Thank you in advance for taking my question as an honest one.
I think you can and should in the appropriate situation.

"I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one. You may call me an agnostic, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being."

It has to do with the word.
Adjective: fundamentalist
1.(theology) of or relating to or tending toward fundamentalism
Noun: fundamentalist
1. A supporter of fundamentalism
Noun: fundamentalism
1. The interpretation of every word in the sacred texts as literal truth

I don't think you'll find an atheist that takes every word in any sacred text as literal truth.
Take a look at the root word...fundamental.

1.
serving as, or being an essential part of, a foundation or basis; basic; underlying: fundamental principles; the fundamental structure.
2.
of, pertaining to, or affecting the foundation or basis: a fundamental revision.
3.
being an original or primary source: a fundamental idea.

noun
5.
a basic principle, rule, law, or the like, that serves as the groundwork of a system; essential part: to master the fundamentals of a trade.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fundam...

When we add the suffix "ism" or "ist" we most often think of it in religious terms.

Could it not just as easily mean...the practice of or the follower of the fundamental basics of an idea or philosophy?

Look at it this way...one might not be a jackass but if he acts like a jackass...chances are he will be called a jackass.

I think that you are right when it comes to religious text but:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fundam...
fun·da·men·tal·ism
noun
1.
( sometimes initial capital letter ) a movement in American Protestantism that arose in the early part of the 20th century in reaction to modernism and that stresses the infallibility of the Bible not only in matters of faith and morals but also as a literal historical record, holding as essential to Christian faith belief in such doctrines as the creation of the world, the virgin birth, physical resurrection, atonement by the sacrificial death of Christ, and the Second Coming.
2.
the beliefs held by those in this movement.
3.
strict adherence to any set of basic ideas or principles: the fundamentalism of the extreme conservatives.

It’s the number three line that has me questioning. Is it just found offensive by some because the label is not wanted, or is it truly an inappropriate one that should not be used? I am not arguing….just pondering.

There are times that I find very little difference in the approach of non-Christians as I do Christians.
Both sides can and will turn a blind eye to anything that is different than their own beliefs.
Thank you for the info AnnieJ! I am glad that I am not the only one that *at times*, has issues with seeing a difference between the two.
