Sorry. But I get paid to post that.
OK. Under threat of litigation, I have to retract this post.

Seems I always drink beer.

A Jewish friend of mine used to point out that the flood myth was OBVIOUSLY meant to be taken as metaphor, since it contradicts itself from one chapter to the next. Hint: EXACTLY how many cattle were on the Ark? Show references to support your answer.
I'd suggest you go with the Jewish metaphor.

First, the Jews do not interpret the story of the flood the way Christians do. The Jews see it as a story relating to the continuing redemption of the Israelites, and not much more.

It is also synonymous with the first creations story, taking the earth back to a place where there was only water and no dry land, where no plants or animals existed. It is a new Genesis or beginning.

As far as the metaphor of what the number of animals taken onto the ark mean, I haven't studied that portion. But I'll be glad for you to share it with me.

I'll take Jewish metaphor (or any metaphor) over literal translation any day.

<quoted text> Are you claiming now that melting of the polar ice caps was what caused the flood?
It could be relevant to the story. One of the great disasters could have actually been caused by the ice shelf breaking off the antarctic main due to warming (and other"possibly tectonic" effects).

<quoted text>I haven't read Borg's book, but I did catch this article when it came out:

http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/07/31/do-y...

"Many Americans are bilingual. They speak a secular language of sports talk, celebrity gossip and current events. But mention religion and some become armchair preachers who pepper their conversations with popular Christian words and trendy theological phrases.

"If this is you, some Christian pastors and scholars have some bad news: You may not know what youÂ’re talking about. They say that many contemporary Christians have become pious parrots. They constantly repeat Christian phrases that they donÂ’t understand or distort.

"Marcus Borg, an Episcopal theologian, calls this practice “speaking Christian.” He says he heard so many people misusing terms such as “born again” and “salvation” that he wrote a book about the practice."
Seen plenty of that. Hanging head in shame.
