The east coast of the United States is covered by plenty of radar. The area where TWA 800 went down was in the range of three long-range radar sites, each with a 200 nautical mile radius, as well as five airports and one radar operated by helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky in Shelton, Conn. A lot of radar means a lot of people sitting in front of screens. The data is all recorded, at each location. Hiding a military warship (deployment records indicate there were none around that night) or a missile track would mean somehow co-opting or coercing every radar operator on duty that night—a daunting task, especially if it was done to cover up an inadvertent military shoot down or unexpected terrorist attack.

To be fair, many conspiracy theorists have used the existing radar data to back up their own ideas of what brought the airplane down—especially the behavior of some boats and radar anomalies from one of the radar sites that registered objects in the area moving at high speeds, then vanishing.(These were judged to be phantom returns from building reflections.) None of these radar returns show anything in the air intersecting the path of the airliner, or any vessel behaving in an overtly suspicious way.(See pages 89–94 in the original report.)

One of the conspiracy web sites, Flight800.org , has a page giving testimony from witnesses who believe that they distinctly saw two separate objects, a missile and a plane, converge. As you listen, pay attention to when the witnesses heard the sound relative to what they saw:

Witness 73:...While keeping her eyes on the aircraft, she observed a 'red streak' moving up from the ground toward the aircraft at an approximately a 45 degree angle. The 'red streak' was leaving a light gray colored smoke trail... AT THE INSTANT THE SMOKE TRAIL ENDED AT THE AIRCRAFT'S RIGHT WING, SHE HEARD A LOUD SHARP NOISE WHICH SOUNDED LIKE A FIRECRACKER HAD JUST EXPLODED AT HER FEET. She then observed a fire at the aircraft followed by one or two secondary explosions which had a deeper sound. She then observed the front of the aircraft separate from the back.

Witness 88:...ALL OF A SUDDEN HE HEARD AN EXPLOSION. HE GLANCED OVER TO THE SOUTHEAST AND OBSERVED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS A FIREWORK ASCENDING INTO THE SKY. All of a sudden, it apparently reached the top of its flight... At this point he observed an airplane come into the field of view. He stated that the bright red object ran into the airplane and upon doing so both the plane and the object turned a real bright red then exploded into a huge plume of flame.
Witness 675:...Noticed an orange flare ascending from the south... trailing white or light gray smoke. HE THEN OBSERVED THE FLARE STRIKE WHAT LOOKED LIKE AN EASTBOUND CESSNA AIRPLANE ON THE PORT SIDE... WITHIN FIVE (5) SECONDS... HE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE THUNDER AND FELT THE GROUND SHAKE.

Witness 145:...She saw a plane and noticed an object spiraling towards the plane. The object which she saw for about one second, had a glow at the end of it and a gray/white smoke trail... SHE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND SAW AN EXPLOSION JUST AS THE OBJECT HIT THE PLANE. The plane dropped towards the water and appeared to split in two pieces. A few seconds later, she heard another explosion.

Whether you're a conspiracy theorist or not, the 1-minute minimum delay required by the speed of sound clearly makes it impossible to corroborate what these people heard with what they think they saw. This illustrates why the witness testimony, while still valuable, cannot be relied on as the definitive explanation for what happened. Anecdotal evidence has value for suggesting directions to research, but it does not by itself constitute evidence, and cannot reasonably be treated as such.

If the U.S. public began to raise a fuss about U.S. missile strikes that blow up large numbers of civilians at wedding parties abroad, it's not beyond the realm of the imaginable that the U.S. government would begin blaming the explosions on faulty candles in the wedding cakes. A similarly implausible excuse was used to explain the 1996 explosion of TWA flight 800 off Long Island, New York, and the U.S. public has thus far either swallowed the story whole or ignored the matter.

If you watch Kristina Borjesson's new film, TWA Flight 800, you'll see a highly persuasive case that this passenger jet full of passengers was brought down by missiles, killing all on board.

A CIA propaganda video aired by U.S. television networks fits with none of the known facts, makes the claim that there were no missiles, and offers no theory as to what then did cause the explosion(s) and crash into the sea.

A coverup by the FBI and the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) was blatant and extensive, involving intimidation of witnesses and investigators, tampering with evidence, false testimony before Congress, censoring reports, and numerous violations of normal protocols. Some of the government's own official investigators concluded that the explosion(s) occurred outside the airplane. They were not permitted to write analyses in their reports, as in every other investigation. Their reports were censored. They were forbidden to testify. Some 200 eyewitnesses -- people on the ground and in other planes, at least many of whom described seeing one or more missiles rising from the ground to the airplane -- were censored as well. Not a single witness was permitted to testify at the public hearing.

The military staged a test firing of missiles with witnesses, in an attempt to prove that the witnesses would either not see the missiles or testify inaccurately about what they saw. However, the witnesses all reported seeing the missiles well. The report on this test came to the opposite conclusion of what had been hoped for, but the government fed the original, hoped-for line to the media, which dutifully reported it....

How many times have I seen Truthers bring up another subject and kick it around slathering it in lies....more lies...and then lie.

Example flight 800.

I suppose that the itinerary for ground zero has to be revamped every now and then to take that broken record edge off with some newly discovered internet gospel as to a 911 conspiracy.

I realize that this board is custom made for the events of 911 but all to often (and often is coming around more often) the cycle is repeated.

So if the material of Twoof starts getting a little rough around the edges a warrior of Twoof will surely dig a whole lot of nothing with a fresh set of flies buzzing around it.

Official Story Is Wrong, Say Six Whistleblowers

TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747, took off from JFK International Airport in New York City with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996, enroute to Paris. Moments later the aircraft exploded, raining debris and humanity off the coast of East Moriches, Long Island. Following a four-year investigation, the federal government's National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), TWA and others declared that the explosion of a fuel tank was caused by faulty wiring that had short-circuited.

'Initially, law enforcement officials believed it was a criminal act'
Almost immediately after the crash, however, reports surfaced that immediately before the explosion dozens of witnesses reported the plane may have been shot down ( http://abcnews.go.com/US/story... ). Per ABC News:

In the days following, nearly 100 of more than 700 eyewitnesses interviewed by the FBI described seeing a streak of light move from the Earth leading to an explosion, which seemed to suggest a missile had struck the Boeing 747.

Initially, law enforcement officials also strongly believed a criminal act - either a bomb or a missile - was the likeliest explanation for the catastrophic explosion, which severed the plane's front end, including the cockpit, from the rest of the fuselage.

In the final NTSB report, however, aviation investigators and the FBI backed away from that theory, saying it just wasn't likely - even though investigators never could determine precisely what caused the explosion.

In their new documentary the six whistleblowers - all from the original crash investigation team including investigators, at the time, from the NTSB, TWA, and the Airline Pilots Association - say the government's explanation was wrong.

"We didn't find any part of the airplane that indicated a mechanical failure," says one of the whistleblowers in the documentary. Rather, they allege that the explosion came from outside the plane.

Besides the missile theory, some believe there may have been a bomb on board Flight 800. But Tom Stalcup, the documentary's co-producer, told CNN there is "solid proof that there was an external detonation."

"Of course, everyone knows about the eyewitness statements, but we also have corroborating information from the radar data, and the radar data shows an asymmetric explosion coming out of that plane - something that didn't happen in the official theory," he said, adding: "Not one single eyewitness was allowed to testify. That's unheard of."

In either case, the whistleblowers believe what did actually happen has been covered up - for years. Former senior accident investigator with the NTSB Hank Hughes is one of them. In a preview of the documentary, he said FBI agents at the time of their investigation were spotted on a surveillance camera in the hanger where the 747 was being reconstructed "in the wee hours of the morning... for purposes unknown."
