On April 3, 2012, the bodies of Robert Varnum, 57, and his live-in girlfriend- Barbara (Bobbi) Raines, 50, were found inside their home. The discovery was made when a process server, attempting to serve documents on someone at the residence, stated he noticed a bad odor and looked into a window. He allegedly stated that he "saw feet" and called 911. A first responder entered the home and upon seeing a second body, exited and called the Hinds County Sheriff's department.

Varnum, a machinist for Cameron-Letourneau in Vicksburg, died from a gunshot wound to the neck. Raines was killed by a gunshot wound to the face. Murder-suicide was ruled out, and the pair are believed to have been murdered sometime on March 31, 2012. A reward of $2500 is being offered for the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible.

Was it drug-related? There was speculation that the two were "experimenting" with drugs at the time of their death. A recent sting-operation arrest of a "major player" in the Edwards, Mississippi drug-scene underscores the fact that dealing in illicit substances is indeed prevalent in the area.

And what of the curious process-server? We all know that people who serve papers are persistent, but is peeking into windows going above the call of duty? And would two bodies, in an enclosed, shaded house in spring actually have decomposed enough to create a smell distinguishable from outdoors in the spring?

Why was Mr. Varnum shot in the neck, while Raines was shot in the face? Could the act have been more personally directed to her, was Varnum 'collateral damage,' merely involved with the wrong woman?

There were no signs of forced entry, leaving the casual observer to believe that the victims must have been at least acquainted with their killer(s). There was no weapon found at the scene. Did the killer(s) arrive with a gun? Or did they take the gun from one of the victims? No mention was made of anything missing at the scene.

Little has been said about this case in the media since it was initially reported in April. Why?
