I am trying to recover old SMS messages
but do not know if it is possible because:

1) the iPhone has been reset and the function 'erase all contact and
settings' was performed;

2) after the reset, the phone was set up
as a new device and synced and backed up with iTunes;

3) previous backups were deleted from the
my PC (there arent any old files in my MobileSync folder nor do any old backups
show up in iTunes)

So my question is are these old SMS gone
forever or can they be retrieved by some means that I am not aware of at this
time?

For iPhone 4/4S/5, you have two solutions to recover your contacts and SMS: connect your iPhone to your computer and use MyJad iTunes Backup Extractor to scan it directly or use MyJad iTunes Backup Extractor to scan iTunes backup for it. Just follow this guide to recover your iPhone SMS. If the SMS you want to retrieve have been found, you can recover them then.

1.Go to Apple Genius bar and see if they can help

2.Restore from your last backup and you should get all of your messages back (assuming you didn't back it up again since those messages disappeared)

3.Ask help from a third party software to recover deleted text messages from iPhone.

Do you know how to retrieve deleted text messages on iPhone 5S? As is known to us, when we have no previous backup to restore, the only way to retrieve deleted text messages from iPhone is by using a third-party iPhone data recovery tool named iPubsoft iPhone Backup Extractor.
