basically there are 4 types of wine

- reds
- whites
- rosays
- fortified.

1. Reds: includes: burgundy, shiraz (syrah), malbec, zinfandel, merlot (pronounced "merlow"), chianti (pronounced "key-ONTI"), pinot noir (pronounced "PEEnoh NWAH") or cabernet sauvignon (pronounced "kaberNAY soveenYAW").

these are mostly dry (as in slightly bitter) but still very good. In some rare cases you will get a late-harvest red which is kinda sweet.

2. whites: includes: pinot grigio (pronounced PEEnoh GREEjyoh), cabernet sauvignon blanc, chardonnay (pronounced: Shardon-NAY"), reisling (pronounced "REES-ling") and moscato.

all these wines are dry EXCEPT for reisling and moscato. Reisling is mostly from GERMANY. It is USUALLY sweet. But it can also be kinda dry.

Moscato is very sweet.

German ice wine (kinda like reisling) also called EISWEIN is also very sweet.

3. Roses ( pronounced RoZAYS) are also called "blush" wines. They are a mix of white and red...so they usually pink or light red in appearance.

white zinfandel is a rose...it is the most popular wine in america...kinda sweet.

there is also white merlot and other blush wines that tend to be more on the sweeter side.

4. Fortified wines are mixed with brandy...this is so the wine can be preserved for a long time. but it raises the alcohol content and the amount of "sweetness" in a wine during fermentation.

port wine is fortified red wine... it's sweet and strong.

sherry wine is fortified WHITE wine...it's dry and strong.

Most people will have a red wine with a steak, burger or ribs.

A white wine USUALLY goes better with fish or chicken.

Like anything else, it's about individual taste. Try different types of wine with different foods and see what works best for you.

Why does wine make me physically ill? I can eat grapes, drink grape juice, eat grape jellies and jams without effect but, one sip of wine and my stomach sours and I get asthma-like symptoms, especially wheezing.
