He did what was right, because it was right. He did not do what others told him to just because it was the "popular" thing to do. He was very moral, and principled. Little trivia, in one scene he looks at his watch. The ticking sound that you hear is the actual ticking sound that Lincoln himself heard, as the sound was recorded from the Smithsonian from his very watch. I get chills when I watch that scene knowing that. Really cool. Also, he was not religious. He was a Rationalist. Clearly he wouldn't have done much of what he had if he were religious. All the more reason to respect him.
