U.S. says U.N. sanctions 'will bite' after North Korea threatens nuclear attack
.
A spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry suggested the United States "is set to light a fuse for a nuclear war."
.
As a result, North Korea "will exercise the right to a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors and to defend the supreme interests of the country," the country said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Despite the strong language, analysts say North Korea is years away from having the technology necessary to mount a nuclear warhead on a missile and aim it accurately at a target.
.
And, analysts say, North Korea is unlikely to seek a direct military conflict with the United States, preferring instead to try to gain traction through threats and the buildup of its military deterrent.
But the threat came amid increased concern over Pyongyang's dogged efforts to advance its nuclear and missile technology after a recent long-range rocket launch and underground atomic blast.

On Tuesday, North Korea said it planned to scrap the armistice that stopped the Korean War in 1953 and warned it could carry out strikes against the United States and South Korea.

N. Korea says it has scrapped armistice that ended Korean War
SEOUL - North Korea said Monday that it had “completely scrapped” the 1953 armistice agreement that ended the Korean War, following up on a threat made days earlier and increasing the likelihood for a strike against or a skirmish with the South.

Pressure Rises on Korean Peninsula
SEOUL—As the South Korean and U.S. militaries began a second phase of their annual joint winter exercises Monday, North Korea cut off a phone hotline to the South and repeated its threat to nullify the Korean War armistice.

Seoul said the North was conducting its own military drills, but the activity didn't suggest an imminent threat.

US sends clear warning to North Korea after Pyongyang declares armistice void
Obama security adviser threatens Pyongyang with 'full range of our capabilities' and urges China to act tough on neighbour
The US has dismissed North Korea's declaration that the 1953 armistice with Seoul is nullified as "bellicose rhetoric" but warned Pyongyang that it will face "the full range of our capabilities" if it were to carry out its threat of a nuclear attack.

Barack Obama's top national security adviser, Tom Donilon, on Monday called on China to join in further isolating Pyongyang, following the North Korean military leadership's declaration that the truce with South Korea was void after Seoul and the US kicked off a joint military exercise.

The Korean Peninsula is heading into a difficult and very dangerous period. South Korean and U.S. troops are now conducting large-scale training exercises. North Korea is also planning military maneuvers, and threatens to pull out of the 1953 Armistice Agreement that has kept the lid on simmering North-South tensions for almost 60 years.

I was in Seoul a few days ago and heard about calls for the reintroduction of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea from conservatives in the National Assembly. As Washington’s ambassador to Seoul in the early 1990s, I worked to get such weapons removed from South Korea, which they were in 1991. A secret nuclear weapons program was started by Seoul in the mid-1970s but was discovered and stopped by the United States. But now recent opinion polls show that a majority of South Koreans favor the development of nuclear weapons by Seoul.

History shows North Korea capable of sudden attack
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA Recent Korean history reveals a sobering possibility: It may only be a matter of time before North Korea launches a sudden, deadly attack on the South. And perhaps more unsettling, Seoul has vowed that this time, it will respond with an even stronger blow.

Humiliated by past attacks, South Korea has promised - as recently as Tuesday - to hit back hard at the next assault from the North, opening up the prospect that a skirmish could turn into a wider war.

Material in North Korea's nuclear test unclear, worrying for U.S.
More than a month after North Korea tested a nuclear device, the United States is unable to pinpoint whether the regime was able to use uranium to fuel the explosion, a capability that would represent a significantly enhanced nuclear program.

The lack of clarity comes as North Korea ratchets up its bellicose rhetoric each day.

New video broadcast on North Korean television showed the nation's leader, Kim Jong Un, addressing his troops along the border on Monday and issuing a blood-chilling threat, "Throw all enemies into the caldron, break their waists and crack their windpipes." It was the same location he and his late father visited in November 2010, just two days before the North shelled an island, killing four South Koreans.

The bellicose comments have been intensifying over the past months, increasing worry about Kim's unpredictability.

"I am very concerned about what they might do. And they are certainly, if they chose ... could initiate a provocative action against the South," Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.

North Korea has threatened a pre-emptive nuclear attack not only on South Korea, but on the United States too. Military and White House officials have said the United States can defend against any such threat. President Barack Obama told ABC news this week that he does not think North Korea can make good on the threat.

"They probably can't, but we don't like margin of error," Obama told ABC News.

North Korea tests artillery near 'disputed territory' with South
North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, releases images of Kim Jong-un supervising live artillery drills close to a disputed sea border with South Korea. U.S. to beef up missile defense against North Korea
WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Friday the Pentagon would bolster missile defense of the U.S. homeland with the addition of 14 interceptor missiles in the face of a growing threat from North Korea.

The additional 30 missiles will bring to 44 the number of interceptors defending the United States as part of a network in California and Alaska, Hagel told reporters in a Pentagon briefing.

The decision expands the system's ability to shoot down long-range missiles in flight before they could reach U.S. territory.

James Miller, defense undersecretary for policy, said in a speech Tuesday that the Pentagon has the ability to deploy up to 14 additional missile interceptors, "if needed." He did not say in the speech that a decision had been made to do so.

"North Korea is not going to war," senior U.S. official says
.
You think North Korea will back down after making a stand. Don't forget China, Russia and other countries back North Korea......101%, even though some military officials claim otherwise.
.
If North Korea were doing illegal weapons manufacturing, then why doesn't The UN intervene and send the troops in like they did in Iraq and other places of occupation, because of law breaking? The reasons are the US Military is stretched too thin and the total National Debt is at 56 trillion $'s. The US economy and the money is in shambles. Those few factors tell the world that the US cannot stand or afford another long dragged out confrontation with another war. Yet they cannot show backing down either. Sort of caught between a rock and a hard place.
.
The DoD says North Korea doesn't have the means of launching International missiles. Maybe so, but Russia and China both do have the capabilities and can give N/K the weapons they need. As pictures do tell us.

North Korea has bolstered its defenses against a “hostile” United States with its third nuclear test, it said on Thursday, noting that countries that had bowed to U.S. pressure to abandon their nuclear plans had suffered “tragic consequences”.

The North carried out its largest nuclear test to date last week, in defiance of U.N. resolutions, prompting warnings of tougher sanctions for the isolated and impoverished state and its young ruler, Kim Jong-un.

If war breaks out you can lay odds who Russia and China will side with...
Hint....It's not USrael.
And North Korea is just an extension of China believe it. The US was fighting the Chinese in the Korean conflict, not North Koreans.
http://keia.org/sites/default/files/events/th...
And the same goes for Viet Nam
http://keia.org/sites/default/files/events/th...
So you can bet on it that all of the North Korean Technology and weaponry comes from Russia and China.
