In most cases I think most would be very slow to decide and that would costs them their lives. However, you never really know until you are in the situation. Fight or flight kicks in with most people.
I have done so personally many times. Albeit it was in combat which is somewhat different, but the basic human element is still present. It seems that in a combat operation some of the "personal" element is taken away and it becomes just another day at work. That is until later anyway. It still has a haunting effect for the rest of your life.
