What is the average number of children in families on food stamps, 3 or 4?
Don't open wide and expect to entrap the sperm donor, who will be long gone the time you reach for that douche bag.
Oh I'm sorry... My mother didn't know she would wake up one day in an impossible situation, abandoned, and with three small children to feed.

Yeah , I guess when she was a little girl, and wondered what she'd be when she grew up, her dream was to be POOR...

Sometimes it just happens. Nobody plans on being poor, and if they have finances to manage, they wouldn't be poor, huh? How you gonna manage money that you don't have.

God Bless You!

Take a breath. You are wrong, and completely wrong at that.
I worked with kids from a rural white "ghetto" where that stereotype includes the fact that most of those kids' UNparents were racial bigots along with the rest of those characteristics I noted. Every single social pathology that has racists pointing the finger at (fill in the blank) was glaringly, tragically destroying those little white kids just the same as any other color little UNparented kid in any other impoverished ghetto anywhere in the nation.
I got started de-lousing "chronic" kids whose addicted, alcoholic, lazy, stupid, disorganized, uncaring UNparents just never seemed to manage the job. We also ended up using some of the grant money we were given to set up a mini-laundromat and get vacuums and cleaning supplies (along with the free de-lousing supplies and training) but ended up doing a lot of the laundry/cleaning too.
While de-lousing these poor kids,(who were dirty, failing in school, who had rotting teeth, chronic ear-nose-throat problems from being marinated in cigarette smoke since before birth, malnourished from a junk-food diet, sleep-deprived from no bedtime, non-stop TV and video games, blaring 24-7 trash music, and traumatized from constant chaos and violence from Mom and grandma's party-life and serial boyfriends, stepfathers, whatever...) they come to trust you, because de-lousing (over and over again) takes a looooong time. They talked to me, and that is what led me to my work against child sexual abuse.
My "profile" or "stereotype" that you objected to is all too horribly accurate.
I helped many decent women in DV work start new lives away from abusive partners and part of that was helping with the forms and procedures of getting the assistance they and their children needed and had every right to receive. I was proud to do it. Those people and the ones you spoke for and about in your reply are NOT the ones who fit my profile of the cheats and abusers.
Please respond and tell me why it is wrong for people who are paying for the food for people who cannot pay for their food to object when those who are receiving that aid don't spend it wisely? It is nobody's concern if one's own money is spent on whatever; if somebody else is paying, it's the paying party's business. Have you never given or loaned money to someone who was desperate for some reason and then found out that they spent it on something foolish and lied about it? Or lied about being desperate? How did you feel? This is a serious question.

<quoted text>LW, Would you be so kind as to provide your source(s) for these statistics? They are factual statistics, are they not? Thanks.
I gave no statistics! Once I read some statistics that had me astonished at how closely they matched my profile- it also included piercings, tattoos, how often a month a family ate fast food and a couple of other weird things. If I do find it, I'd like to see it again. It was in an article in a social work academic journal, several years ago.

If I ever meet a college-educated, completely healthy white American male on foodstamps I will encourage him to move out of his mom's basement and get a job. Your post is nonsense, your judgement upon LW completely erroneous, and your entire point of view apparently skewed by some sort of equivelency nonsense that seems to have infected 90 percent of people nowadays. On the plus side, you seem to have an active imagination.

I agree with you. My father left my mom, my brother and sister& me, when I was 4yrs old. He never paid a dime in child support. My mother got a job in a furniture factory. She only made $79.00 a week. If it hadn't been for foodstamps we would have starved to death. Trust me, even with foodstamps we went hungry a lot. Mom looked for bargains, bulk, and day old. It still wasn't enough. She did the best she could. I have been very fortunate to never have had to apply for government assistance. With the way the economy is, we'll all probably have to before long.
I also look for people to start getting more because food prices have sky rocketed.
I think we should be more concerned about children going hungry. Just pray to God that it will never be your children....
No, I don't agree that people should get them if they're able to work or just cheating the system. That really pisses me off, but there are usually children involved. Look at the poor people on disability. Would you want them to starve to death. Have a heart!
I am proud to have been one of the many who helped your family out. I wish you had had more help than you got. Now, you, your mom and siblings have, no doubt, contributed FAR more in taxes than you ever received in benefits.
Kudos!

Outstanding point. I have long held that NO cash, ONLY vouchers, coupons, or direct deposit of assistance benefits should be the paramount rule of entitlement programs. Coupons for hygiene allowances would be part of such a reformation of welfare.

It's common sense.
Obviously only people who believe differently get defensive about it.
I HAVE YOU TO KNOW IM NOT ON FOOD STAMPS BUT I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD SWEEP THERE OWN FRONT STEP BEFORE SWEEPING OTHERS AND STOP JUDGEING PEOPLE FOR WHAT THEY MY LOOK LIKE OR WHAT THEY MAY DO .BUT OFCORSE YOU OBVIOUSLY THINK YOUR SHIT DONT STINK AND THAT YOUR BETTER THAN OTHERS .

In NYC you never hardly see any overweight people. I'm 130 and 5feet and4inches tall I thought I looked obese when I went to NYC

Yes the ACLU did that back in the late 90's.
There are issues here as well with the daycare. Some welfare parents just forget to come and get their kids. This is usually at the daycare centers. Some of the employees have remained until 11:00 at night waiting for parents and then just take the kids home and call social services the next day. The parent is then located, basicly slapped on the wrist and then the parents wait a week before they do it again.
The ones who suffer the most are the kids. Many grow up not knowing how to support themselves, suffer from depression, low self esteem, etc.
About 8 years ago, I had to apply for assistance. In order to receive assistance, I had to prove I was working a minimum amount of hours. If I was not, I had to go to the Michigan Works office and spend the remaining time LOOKING for a job. I also had to attend a money management class and other classes to qualify. I feel that is the way it should be done everywhere. Make looking for a job like a job while they are receiving welfare and foodstamps. They had free child care, so that wasn't an issue (or excuse) for those who balked at the idea of having to pay someone to watch their children. They even provided transportation to those who needed it. They were trying to help these people get a job and get back on their feet, the way it should be.

I don't know if it's still that way, or if it was just that way for my county, but I thought it was a damned smart idea.

Your family is happy? Happy that you have to go to food pantries for hand outs because you don't have enough money or food stamps to feed all of you? Happy that you get all your clothes from thrift stores or hand me downs, because you can't afford to go to a real store and buy items? I'm sure they are real happy to have such a lazy excuse of a parent, who would rather spend all her time online boasting how proud she is of being poor and doing nothing about. Oh, and the comments you made on the bisexual women thread...I'm sure you're equally proud of that as well, as I"m sure the rest of your family would be happy about it as well.

You really need to get your head out of that hole you call an ass and get real. You disgust me.

You know I really don't hate everyone that gets benfits, just the ones who abuse them. I really do think the welfare systems needs to be overhauled. Maybe the goverment needs to hire people who used the system to get off the system to run the welfare department. Our welfare department only makes and lets abusers have free rien to do nothing in their lifes and have generations of families on the system. It's really fustrating!!!

In thestatee of Virginia this does not happen.I know this due to the fact that a friend of mine, her husband was incarcerated, and she lost their disablity benefits after 30 days.
For the 12 years I was active, plus the almost-three that I have been aware and working on legislation, that has been one of the most frustrating aspects of this issue. Only, ONLY the most worthy and deserving people (plus those who are flogged and prodded by their social workers armed with the regulations and laws they enforce) are inwardly, morally motivated to get off assistance. Their "reward" is all-too-often losing the child care and health benefits that absolutely make the difference between "can" and "can't"...when then ONE glitch, one trip-up that would mean just an inconvenience to everyone NOT on assistance...(car broke down, sick kid..etc..) destroys all the months of work it took to get back on their feet and off assistance. Once a human being has been through this cycle two, three, six times...that individual tends to lose confidence in herself, the system and everything else.
Everything else.
Oneself.
Whom else?
