Obama – the Anti-President

Barack Obama has been accused of being “the worst president ever” by more than a few Americans.

Dick Cheney recently said he is the worst president of his lifetime.

A new Quinnipiac University survey found U.S. voters rate him the worst president since World War II.

Interviews with inner-city black residents in Chicago, where Obama made a name for himself as a community organizer, showed some characterizing Obama as the worst president in U.S. history.

But I think these assessments miss the point. In fact, I think they badly understate the threat posed by Obama.

If Obama is measured against his predecessors, by almost any standard he will be judged harshly. However, Obama is different from any of his predecessors.

There have been good presidents and bad presidents. There have been effective presidents and ineffective presidents. But there has never been anyone like Obama in the White House.

That’s because he the first Anti-President.

What do I mean by that term?

I mean he is the opposite of a president as we have previously thought about that office in America.

Men have sought the presidency over the last 225 years of American history for a variety of reasons. They had different ideas about how to use the office to improve the country, to expand its opportunities, to defend it from enemies, to preserve or expand freedom, perhaps even to pad their resumes and their legacies.

Yet, as a student of history, I can’t think of any previous U.S. president who ran for office and won with the express purpose of diminishing the power and influence of the country and subverting the founding principles that made America exceptional.

That’s why Obama is the Anti-President.

If you think about this idea, it explains much about what he is doing and why.

You have to start at the beginning of what the Constitution says about the office of the presidency to understand this concept.

Obama stretched the boundaries of the law of the land simply by running for office. It was a controversy from the start. Is he and was he a “natural born Citizen,” as the Constitution requires? Understand that Article II of the Constitution distinguishes this mysterious requirement from mere citizenship. There’s much debate about what it means. A recent poll shows the country still divided over whether Obama is constitutionally eligible to hold the office.

Isn’t that what you would expect from the first Anti-President?

WASHINGTON — Like the rest of the world, the U.S. government appeared to have been taken aback last month when Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, fell to an offensive by jihadis of the Islamic State that triggered the collapse of five Iraqi army divisions and carried the extremists to the threshold of Baghdad.

A review of the record shows, however, that the Obama administration wasn’t surprised at all.

In congressional testimony as far back as November, U.S. diplomats and intelligence officials made clear that the United States had been closely tracking the al Qaida spinoff since 2012, when it enlarged its operations from Iraq to civil war-torn Syria, seized an oil-rich province there and signed up thousands of foreign fighters who’d infiltrated Syria through NATO ally Turkey.

The testimony, which received little news media attention at the time, also showed that Obama administration officials were well aware of the group’s declared intention to turn its Syrian sanctuary into a springboard from which it would send men and materiel back into Iraq and unleash waves of suicide bombings there. And they knew that the Iraqi security forces couldn’t handle it.

Barack Obama has already checked out of his job

The degree to which Barack Obama is now phoning it in – sleepwalking perfunctorily through his second term, amid golf rounds and dinner parties – is astonishing President Obama has emotionally checked out of his job a couple of years early, it seems. How can one tell?

Candidates for president who brazenly assume they are the inevitable victor are sometimes accused of “measuring the drapes” for the White House. The only thing that makes sense is that he is exhausted and, perhaps, has checked out of the job early.

Obama, conversely, seems to be prematurely packing his bags in hopes for an early departure. Just last week, for example, the Los Angeles Times reported that “The First Family is believed to be in escrow on a contemporary home in a gated community where entertainers Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby once maintained estates”.

If Nero fiddled while Rome burned, then Obama is dining out, golfing, and raising money while the world collapses.

Consider this: In recent days, a) Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down, apparently by Russian separatists in Ukraine, b) In the Gaza strip, the numbers killed continued to mount as Israelis and Palestinians exchange rocket fire, c) a huge influx of children fleeing Central American poverty and gang warfare swamped America’s southern border, creating a humanitarian crisis. And, oh yeah, d) Christians living in Mosul were given the choice to either convert to Islam or flee the area they have inhabited for nearly two thousand years.

You know what else has happened during this time? a) Obama played many rounds of golf, b) he attended numerous fund-raisers, c) he dined on barbecue in Texas and burgers in Delaware, and d) he almost appeared on the comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night television show in Hollywood.

This is at best unromantic, and, at worst, cynical. Words matter.

Showing up matters. Was it a “photo-op” when Ronald Reagan spoke in front of the Brandenburg Gate and declared:“Tear down this wall!”?
