DADE CITY - The theft of a case of beer Monday evening triggered a chase through rural eastern Pasco that ended with two teen-agers dead and a 21-year-old man critically injured.
Bonnie Jean Biddle and Robert Wayne McCullough, both 19, were killed after the vehicle they were riding in slammed into the rear of a front-end loader at Pasco Products on Burn Bridge Road.
The driver, Christopher Bryant, 21, remained in the intensive care unit in extremely critical condition Tuesday at Tampa General Hospital, a spokesman said.
Dade City Police Chief Phil Thompson said Bryant's Blazer crashed after being chased by officers in two cars who were called to the Presto Food Store on U.S. 98 Bypass at 7:07 p.m. Monday to investigate a theft.
Thompson declined to say what had been reported stolen, but a fourth person who said he jumped from Bryant's truck because of 'an arrest warrent' said Bryant had taken a case of beer.
David Biddle, 24, husband of Bonnie Biddle, said he kept telling Bryant to stop racing away, but his friend continued to travel 60 to 70 mph.
``I was telling him to stop. Stop, hell, we'll just spend the night in jail - just stop,`` said David Biddle.``(Bryant) kept saying:`Just shut up, Dave. Just shut up.``'
Although the Police Department's policy is to not pursue vehicles for traffic violations or misdemeanors, Thompson said such a rule can be bent based on a supervisor's discretion.
``There are mitigating circumstances of this entire crime that can't come to light`` until the investigation is complete, he said. The fourth passenger David Biddle said the four friends had no plans for Monday night. He said they already had been drinking and were ``halfway drunk`` when they went to the Presto store.
As he, his wife and McCullough waited in the truck, he said, Bryant went into the store and came swiftly out with a case of beer.
``Apparently he didn't pay for it. He just jumped in and took off. We went around the block and came onto Meridian and were about to get back onto the 98 Bypass and at that point a police officer pulled up behind us.
``He put on his lights. We pulled over and Chris got out. The police officer told Chris to stand behind the truck. They apparently knew I was in the truck because they said:`David Biddle, put your hands out of the truck so I can see them,``' he said.
Biddle said he stuck his hands out.``And then I looked and Chris was getting in the truck and cranked it up and left,`` he said.
Biddle said he told Bryant to stop the truck to let him and his wife out, but he refused. As Bryant turned a corner onto a dirt road, Biddle said he ``dove out.``
Not long afterward, he saw emergency vehicles going by.
``I knew something had happened. When we got there, they were taking Chris in the ambulance and they was pumping him. An ambulance driver said he took two white males out of the truck and they're both alive but they're in bad shape. But there is someone else in the truck that didn't make it.
``I said,`Is that someone a girl with blond hair?' He said yes,`` Biddle said,'Its
my wife'.

They didn't though. What happened sucked.... and it sucked BADLY for the person who didn't want to run, but it's not the fault of the police, it's completely the fault of the person who ran from the police.

Bad things happen to good people, sometimes because of the people they choose to associate with.

I lost 4 friends to a chase (no police involved), and I know how much it hurts. My condolences.

Cops who endanger others by engaging in a high speed pursuit over a case of beer should be fired. How can the public trust their judgement if they exercise it in this way. Nevertheless, blame your "friend" for your wife's death, because he killed her as surely as if he had shot her. I'm very sorry for your loss, but that's the way I see it.

What about the fact that they were just kids, having fun? Chris Bryant is my father... his life is ruined because of this, but he is lucky to be alive. The others were not. I honestly belive God let him live to think about his decisions everytime he cant get up and walk.... more of a torture... his personal punishment for taking the lives of 3 people. He did definately make a horrible decision... it did take multiple lives but I think that the cops shouldnt of persued the vehical. You have 4 half drunk teens in the car.... one is the driver... 3 are pure victims.... I know that if i were in a vehical and nobody would stop.... i wouldnt want to die. Yes it is my fathers fault but there comes a point in which a case of beer is not worth 3 lives being taken. The dade city police department should of not proceeded, this is my opinion.
