Lumberton, NC, located on i-95 in southeastern NC, is home to the Lumberton Youth Baseball Association (LYBA), part of the Dixie Youth Baseball plethora of teams. I always thought we were a measure ahead of other divisions when it came to skill level and abilites of our players. Our coaches, however, are another story. The coaches have secret meetings prior to the season and decide, before the season begins, who they want on their all star team at season's end. Then they make a pact to select the core group of players between their four teams to ensure their 12 players are in their division. The focus is NOT on teaching all players and helping them grow. These coaches, we'll call them Chris, Chris, and Crickett, only care about the post season, or all stars.
I was foolish and ignorant enough to agree to join in their pact this season, with guarantees that my son (who made the all star team last year without any deals being made) would be selected, and I would help coach.

Well, we had our all star selection tonight, while I am out of town in Florida, and neither myself or my son were selected to participate. There were, however, 4 players who definitely rank well below my son in skill and dedication to the game.
That being said, I am embarrassed, ashamed, and humiliated by my agreeing to team with the three liars in the first place. It also sickens me to know our President is aware of their dealings year after year and has never stepped up and tried to prevent it. Of course, his child plays in an older league, so he is immune to their politics. It also doesn't help that the LYBA Board is made up of mostly coaches, who bend and change the rules yearly to benefit them.
Case in point: A new rule was enacted this year that prevents a child who lives outside of our district lines from playing in LYBA. However, we have a coach who lives 5 miles into another town's district, but his son is allowed to play in our league. His son is also allowed to play on the All-Star team, even though Dixie Youth rules expressly forbid an out of district player from participating. There are two other players, who are extremely talented, who live 3-4 miles closer to our district, who were told "Your child can play in the regular season, but he cannot play for the all-star team." When asked about the difference in application of the rules, we are told that the coach's son is allowed to play (after receiving approval from Dixie Youth) because his father has been coaching for at least 3 years. Now, the other two kids'(that were excluded, remember) parents have only been coaching for 2 years. Convenient that the rule was set at 3 years? Especially considering one of the "excluded" coaches had an issue with the "grandfathered" coach during the previous season, and the "grandfathered" coach sits on the LYBA board? Anyone seeing a pattern here? Also, Dixie Youth denies ever hearing about the coach who loves out of our district, we'll call him Chris H. for lack of a better name.

I have been lied to from the beginning. Yes, I am angry, but I am stepping up and admitting I took part in the very behavior I criticized in years past. I am guilty of participating in an activity that degrades and puts a black eye on youth sports. I aplogize to my community and my son for taking such action. But I cannot sit idly by and watch the three liars...again, we'll call them "Chris H., Chris C., and Crickett B., ruin the sport we love dearly. I have decided I will never again coach youth sports, as I have contributed to the aforementioned black eye. But I will not stop exposing those who allow such behaviors, either.

Yes the activity you described does go on. However, if your son had made all stars would you have even taken the time to write this. Remember this is for the kids!

I live in Lumberton and have seen first hand what these coaches have done. I have had other coaches tell me the exact same thing. The common practice now is stack one league with your 12 best best/most connected players to insure a good all star team. 2 years ago, this is exactly what happened and that team won the Dixie Youth World Series. Now those were some talented kids, but that is how that many kids got on one team. Other years, they will only have one league and teams will have 12-14 kids on them. These three coaches mentioned above along with a few others have almost ruined baseball in Lumberton. Kids get fed up and do other things because of the mistreatment.

True. So true. What parents such as yourself need to do is write/call/email the Dixie Youth State and National officials. They need to hear the truth from more than one person. The response I get is "We aren't getting any other complaints, so this must be an isolated occurrence." In other words, "You are the only one complaining, so you must be angry. We don't see anything wrong with what they are doing." I hear many parents who echo your exact sentiments, yet none ever proceed with forwarding their complaints and concerns to the league officials. LYBA is corrupt. Everyone who has a child playing in this league is aware. ANd your comment about kids doing other things instead of playing baseball is so true. Registrations have decreased by the dozens each year since Chris Brewington, Chris Connor,and Chris Hodge have started coaching in this league. It's a shame that they are allowed to continue to impact our children, much less sit on the board for LYBA.

UPDATE: How's this for a kids' sport? Robert Brewington (Crickett), Chris Connor, and Chris hodge, in their effort to promote gamesmanship and simply let the boys (and girls) play, decided to demand a meeting with LYBA league officials after losing to the West Robeson team three days ago. Their concern was a player on the West Robeson team might be a few months older than the cutoff age for Coach Pitch. Note, I said a few months....not years. Those three went so far as to call that boy's parents liars, and convinced LYBA league officials to remove this child from the West Robeson All-Star team, two games away from the State level. Did losing affect these three liars that badly? I find it appalling that three grown men can take a kids' game to this level. It's one thing to get upset when you lose....to have your team not play as well as you know they can...to have players not show up for practice....These are all part of the game. But, to miss your All-Star team's practice in order to go to a meeting to have a child kicked off an All-Star team because you want an advantage when you play that team again.....well...that's simply lower than I thought those three liars would stoop. They have already proven that they are not men of their words....they are willing to lie, cheat, and manipulate to get their way. Now they have broken the heart of young boy who earned a spot on an All-Star team....this boy did NOTHING to the three C's, except catch every ball hit his way, and shut down the left side of the infield against the LYBA Nationals. i guess you know the outcome....Lumberton won tonight. But, can they really enjoy it after stooping so low to get that win? Baseball should not be like this....when it starts to cause parents to second-guess letting their children play, and cause so much animosity between parents/coaches/players....is it really worth it to expose our children to lying, cheating, spineless, despicable men such as these?

Maybe it's time we boycott Dixie Youth and invite Little League back to Lumberton???

Preach it Seminoles......according to the Dixie Youth code of ethics
Respect and adhere to the principle that Dixie Youth Baseball is a "fun" program, and that it is designed for
the enjoyment of youngsters and is not meant to be a hobby for adults;
Recognize and support the main purpose of Dixie Youth Baseball which is to provide a recreation outlet for as many as possible with emphasis being on local league play rather than tournament play;
****seems to me LYBA is more like Daddy Ball and it's all about tournament and that's it.

Dude, this sounds like a lot of sour grapes on your part. Why do you continue to slam these guys? Their players and parents want to play for them, not like what was said about you this year. As for the West Robeson all-star team, they were caught with 2 illegal players, one of which was the son of one of the coaches {guess that parent/coach WAS a liar since he altered his son's birth certificate}. This player, according to his real birth certificate, will be 10 in November! Coach Pitch is for 7 & 8 year olds. How's that for cheating. Also LYBA can't kick anyone off of another team, that is fully the responsibility of the Dixie Youth officials. And when did Lumberton ever have Little League anyway to invite back??
As for another statement that was made about LYBA. There has only been two times in the history of LYBA that there was only one league in an age division. Both times at the approval of the State President. The first time the all-star team never made it out of the district tournament, the last time World Series Champions.
You also earlier mentioned about a "grandfathered coach" and a 3 year rule. That was not a LYBA rule but a Dixie Youth Baseball rule.

Seminoles I agree 100% this games is for our children not the parents or coaches to live thru there children. As far as Diie Youth I feel it is a really good progam just there are some parents and coaches that make the program bad. Robeson county PEOPLE are like crickets they see one get to the top run up there an pull it back down they never wants someone else to do better. Dont get me wrong this not all people but for the game of baseball in roeson county this so true. This is food for thought let the children play ball and have fun and grown folks stay out of it. If we as adults would be like children this world would be a better place. Children will fight one minute and play the next. We need to instill the LOVE of JESUS in these folks. As far as WRBA we have great program no its not perfect but we help a lot of children that are not ALLSTARS and may never be but to see there faces when they come out to play is well worth it all. So the next time you want to bash someone or a child go and take a long look in the mirror first. So that being said lets play ball!!

These coaches need to be exposed for what they are.
Not only did they try to keep two kids from playing quoting they are out of district, they also told the boys' parents they could not coach because they live out of district. That is a bold faced lie. You do not have to live in district to coach for Dixie Youth. They are on the board and know this and lied to benefit their agenda.
Grandfathered in? Please show me that in the rules. Even if it is true the state director would have had to sign a release to allow the out of district child to play for LYBA. The state director stated he has never heard of the parent or child. Soooooo.....where's this release.
The West Robeson AllStar team was not caught with two illegal players. The 2nd player in which you are referring never played in an AllStar game. Upon reviewing his birth certificate he missed the birthdate cutoff by seven days and was removed. The other child, however, should not have been allowed to play but this is solely the fault of his parent who provided a false birth certificate. Is he a liar? Yes, but that does not make the whole West Robeson team and other coaches liars and cheaters. They were lied to also by this parent. This team should not be judged on the actions of a parent when they had no knowledge of his wrong doing.
Okay.....I'm done.

OMG! Chris Connor? Robert Brewington? Chris Hodge? What about Ricky, Daryl, and all the other coaches who only care about all stars? Those three are not the only "liars" in LYBA. I have watched those guys ruin the reputation of LYBA over the years, conspiring amongst themselves to push their boys through and exclude so many taslented young players. This league should not be about self promotion, or the promotion of your own kids.

To Luvs Baseball: you are obviously one of the three men seminoles is speaking of. So, shame on you. You certainly know a lot about the birth certificate issue...it's obvious you spent some time preparing an argument against it. Hey, if that's what it takes for you to beat West Robeson,then I hope you are happy.

As for "when was Little League ever in Lumberton?" You obviously didn't grow up playing baseball in Lumberton, or you would know that your precious LYBA has not been around forever (although I am not surprised at your ignorance). Many of us grew up playing Little League baseball through the Bill Sapp Recreation Dept. Remember? Back when coaches didn't lie and cheat? Back when there was no all star team? Back when the emphasis was on TEAM, and teaching these kids how to play? The emphasis was not on pushing your own agendas and children through. It was about teaching and coaching a TEAM.

As for your knee jerk (guilty) response concerning the grandfather clause, you are obviously well informed on that one, too. It must be your child that is playing illegally...And, yes, it WAS a Dixie youth rule...no longer in effect. I double checked, and the state chairman (who lives in VA????) has never heard of you or your child. So, as Facts asked....Where is this release? According to the Dixie Youth rules, there should be a written letter of exception on file with LYBA for this player....(and I am sure you will scramble to obtain one now that the cat is out of the bag).

Did you guys really tell two dads they couldn't coach because they lived out of district? I surely hope that is not true. That really undermines the true intention of the sport of baseball (I mean, your nickname on this site is "Luvs Baseball") and ruins the opportunities for some really good dads to work with kids.

I've sat idly by and watched all three of you coach, and I am not impressed. You do not set a good example for our kids to emulate. You are overly critical of players and other coaches, and laugh and ridicule them away from the field. I thank God my boys are not in Coach Pitch, as I would surely have had words with all three of you by now.

I do, however, see the same things seminoles described happening in Minors and Majors. It is obvious that it will never stop, and we are powerless to change it. Unless, that is, we simply stop signing our kids up. Let your 12 players have the league to themselves. Then you can have a season of practices to get ready for the all stars (and you'll still get your asses kicked).

I agree with seminoles, bring Little League back. And let the moms sit on the "board." Then it will actually be beneficial and worthwhile to the league and the players.

Rock on WRBA!

Yes, congratulations are in order for the West Robeson Nationals! Great job, boys! And, congratulations to all the boys and girls who played in every league this year. We saw some great plays, and some great games. You all are learning to become men, and women, while on the ballfield. Please don't emulate Chris Connor, Chris Hodge, Robert Brewington, and any others who put all stars ahead of your learning and well being. Listen to your Dads, as they always know more than those morons.

Sorry to dissapoint you boys but I am not any of the coaches you speak of. My guess is that they are all still at the fields or on their way home as this is being posted. I never said that Little League was not in Lumberton, just asked when was it ever. You know the Little League franchise that sends allstar teams to Williamsport every year??(you said there were no allstar teams back in the day when you played Little League). And I think everyone knows that LYBA has only been around for about 15 years or so. Also what does it matter if a kid is 1 day too old or 1 year too old, either way they are not legal players for that league.
